Slow login and desktop loading in Windows 11 usually happens when too many apps and services start at sign-in. Windows has to load your user profile, background processes, startup programs, and desktop items all at once, which can delay everything.
It can also be caused by temporary junk files, low free disk space, outdated drivers, or a damaged user profile. In some cases, Windows Update tasks or cloud sync apps start working immediately after login and make the desktop feel stuck or incomplete.
Common Symptoms
- The sign-in screen takes a long time to move to the desktop
- The desktop appears, but icons, taskbar, or Start menu load very slowly
- Startup apps open one by one for several minutes after login
- The PC shows a spinning cursor or black screen before the desktop is usable
- File Explorer or right-click menus are slow right after signing in
How to Fix It Manually
-
Disable unnecessary startup apps
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc
- Click Startup apps in the left sidebar
- Sort by Startup impact
- Right-click apps you do not need at login and choose Disable
- Leave security software, touchpad tools, audio drivers, and graphics utilities enabled unless you know they are unnecessary
-
Check for apps running in the background after sign-in
- In Task Manager, click Processes
- Sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk
- Look for apps using heavy resources right after login
- If a non-essential app is stuck or using a lot of resources, right-click it and select End task
- If the same app causes delays every time, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps
-
Clean temporary files
- Open Settings > System > Storage
- Click Temporary files
- Check items such as temporary files, DirectX shader cache, and recycle bin contents if safe to remove
- Click Remove files
- Then go back to Storage and make sure you still have healthy free space on your system drive, ideally at least 15-20 GB
-
Pause or review sync apps
- Apps like OneDrive, Google Drive, Steam, Adobe Creative Cloud, and game launchers can slow desktop loading
- Check the system tray near the clock for sync or launcher apps starting automatically
- Open each app’s settings and disable Start with Windows if you do not need it
- For OneDrive, click the cloud icon, then Settings > Sync and backup or Settings > General, depending on version, and review startup behavior
-
Update Windows and drivers
- Open Settings > Windows Update
- Click Check for updates and install everything important
- Restart your PC
- Then update graphics, chipset, and storage drivers from your PC maker’s support page if login delays started after an update or hardware change
-
Test with a clean boot
- Press Windows+R, type msconfig, and press Enter
- Open the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services
- Click Disable all
- Next, open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable all non-essential startup items
- Restart your PC and test login speed
- If it improves, re-enable items in small groups until you find the cause
-
Run system file repairs
- Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin)
- Run:
sfc /scannowDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Restart after both commands finish
