How to Fix Windows 11 Context Menu Slow Right-Click Delay

What Causes This?

A slow right-click menu in Windows 11 is usually caused by overloaded shell extensions. These are menu items added by apps like archive tools, cloud storage clients, graphics drivers, and uninstallers, and too many of them can delay the menu from opening. Leftover entries from apps you already removed can also cause Explorer to hang while it tries to load missing components. In some cases, corrupted system files or a stuck Windows Explorer process make the delay worse.

Common Symptoms

• The right-click menu takes several seconds to appear
• File Explorer freezes briefly when you right-click a file or folder
• The classic “Show more options” menu is also slow
• The delay happens only on certain file types, folders, or the desktop
• Explorer restarts or becomes unresponsive after right-clicking

How to Fix It Manually

1. Restart Windows Explorer first

   • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc
   • Find Windows Explorer under Processes
   • Right-click it and choose Restart
   • Test the right-click menu again in File Explorer or on the desktop

2. Check if the problem is caused by third-party startup apps

   • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager
   • Go to the Startup apps tab
   • Disable non-essential apps, especially cloud sync tools, archive utilities, GPU control panels, and file tools
   • Restart your PC and test again
     This helps identify whether background software is loading slow shell integrations.

3. Remove apps that add context menu items you do not use

   • Press Windows + I to open Settings
   • Go to Apps > Installed apps
   • Uninstall apps that commonly add right-click entries if you no longer need them
   • Pay special attention to old compression tools, PDF tools, media converters, version control tools, and duplicate cloud storage apps
   • Restart your PC after uninstalling

4. Run system file repairs

   • Click Start, type cmd
   • Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator
   • Run this command:

     sfc /scannow

   • When it finishes, run:

     DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

   • Restart your PC after both scans complete

5. Test in a clean boot

   • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter

   • Test right-click performance

6. Check for Windows updates

   • Open Settings > Windows Update

7. If the issue started recently, use System Restore

   • Press Start, type Create a restore point, and open it
   • Click System Restore
   • Choose a restore point from before the right-click delay started
   • Follow the prompts to restore Windows
