What Causes This?

Windows 11 Start menu search is tied to Microsoft Search and Bing integration by default. When you type in Start, Windows can show local files and apps along with web results, trending searches, and online suggestions. This behavior is built into Windows, but it can also add extra background activity and make Start search feel cluttered or less focused on local results.

Common Symptoms

  • Web results appear when you search for apps, files, or settings in Start
  • Bing suggestions or trending searches show up in the Start menu
  • Start search feels slower than expected
  • Search results look cluttered with online content you do not want
  • You want Start search to stay local to your PC

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn off search highlights in Windows Settings

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Click Privacy & security.
    3. Select Search permissions.
    4. Scroll down to More settings.
    5. Turn Show search highlights Off.
  2. Disable web search from the Registry

    1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, then press Enter.
    2. If prompted by User Account Control, click Yes.
    3. In Registry Editor, go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
    4. If the Explorer key does not exist:
      • Right-click Windows
      • Select New > Key
      • Name it Explorer
    5. Right-click the right pane and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
    6. Name it DisableSearchBoxSuggestions.
    7. Double-click it and set Value data to 1.
    8. Click OK.
  3. Restart Windows Explorer

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    2. In the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer.
    3. Right-click it and select Restart.
  4. Sign out or restart your PC if search still shows web results

    1. Click Start > your profile icon > Sign out, then sign back in.
    2. If that does not work, restart your PC from Start > Power > Restart.
  5. Optional: Use Group Policy if you have Windows 11 Pro

    1. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
    2. Go to: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer
    3. Double-click Turn off display of recent search entries in the File Explorer search box if you also want to reduce search suggestions there.
    4. For Start menu web search behavior, the Registry method above is usually the most direct and reliable on current Windows 11 builds.
  6. Verify the change

    1. Press the Windows key and type a common term like weather or browser.
    2. Check whether Start now shows mostly local apps, files, and settings instead of Bing or web suggestions.
