How to Fix Windows 11 Start Menu Slow or Freezing

What Causes This?

A slow or freezing Start menu in Windows 11 is usually caused by overloaded background processes, corrupted system files, or a problem with the Start menu process itself. Too many startup apps, broken Windows updates, search indexing issues, or a damaged user profile can also make the Start menu lag when you click it. In some cases, graphics driver issues or high disk usage in the background make the menu feel unresponsive.

Common Symptoms

• Clicking the Start button does nothing for several seconds
• The Start menu opens, then freezes or closes immediately
• Search inside the Start menu is slow or does not respond
• Taskbar icons lag along with the Start menu
• Windows feels normal otherwise, but Start is unusually slow

How to Fix It Manually

1. Restart the Start menu and Windows Explorer

   • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
   • If Task Manager opens in compact view, click More details.
   • Find Windows Explorer under the Processes tab.
   • Right-click it and choose Restart.
   • Then look for Start or StartMenuExperienceHost.exe under background processes. If you see it, right-click it and choose End task. Windows should restart it automatically.

2. Check for heavy background usage

   • In Task Manager, click the Processes tab.
   • Sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk to see what is using the most resources.
   • If a non-essential app is consuming a lot, right-click it and choose End task.
   • Pay special attention to third-party antivirus tools, updater apps, RGB software, and browser processes with many tabs open.

3. Disable unnecessary startup apps

   • Open Task Manager and go to the Startup apps tab.
   • Right-click apps you do not need at startup and choose Disable.
   • Focus on launchers, chat apps, game clients, and vendor utilities you rarely use.
   • Restart your PC and test the Start menu again.

4. Run Windows system file repairs

   • Right-click the Start button and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
   • Run this command:

     sfc /scannow

   • Wait for it to finish. Then run:

     DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

   • Restart your PC after both scans complete.

5. Install Windows updates

   • Open Settings > Windows Update.
   • Click Check for updates.
   • Install all available updates, including optional quality updates if the problem started recently.
   • Restart your PC after updating.

6. Rebuild the search index

   • Open Settings and search for Indexing Options.
   • Open Advanced indexing options.
   • Click Advanced, then under Troubleshooting, click Rebuild.
   • This can help if the Start menu is slow mainly when searching.

7. Test with a new user account

   • Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
   • Click Add account and create a new local user account.
   • Sign into that account and test the Start menu.
   • If it works normally there, your main profile may be corrupted.
