How to Fix Windows 11 Black Screen on Startup or After Login

What Causes This?

A black screen in Windows 11 at startup or after login is usually caused by a graphics driver problem, a broken startup app, or Windows Explorer failing to load correctly. It can also happen after a Windows update, display setting change, or when a connected monitor is not detected properly. In some cases, corrupted system files or fast startup issues can leave Windows running but not showing the desktop.

Common Symptoms

• You see a black screen with only the mouse pointer visible
• The screen goes black after entering your password
• The PC appears to boot, but the desktop and taskbar never load
• Pressing keys works, but nothing appears on screen
• The problem started after an update, driver install, or app install

How to Fix It Manually

1. Force Windows to refresh the graphics driver

   • Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B
   • Your screen may flicker and you may hear a beep
   • If the desktop appears, restart your PC normally

2. Check if Windows Explorer is stuck

   • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
   • If Task Manager opens, click More details
   • Look for Windows Explorer under Processes
   • If you see it, right-click it and choose Restart
   • If you do not see it:
     • Click File > Run new task
     • Type explorer.exe
     • Click OK

3. Disconnect external displays and test the display output

   • Turn off the PC completely
   • Unplug extra monitors, docks, HDMI cables, and USB display adapters
   • Start the PC again with only one display connected
   • If you use a laptop, press Windows + P, then press the Down Arrow once or twice and hit Enter to switch display mode

4. Boot into Safe Mode and disable startup apps

   • If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift and click Power > Restart
   • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart
   • Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode
   • Once in Safe Mode:
     • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
     • Open the Startup apps tab
     • Disable recently added or unnecessary startup items
   • Restart normally and check if the black screen is gone

5. Roll back or reinstall the graphics driver

   • In Safe Mode, press Windows + X and select Device Manager
   • Expand Display adapters
   • Right-click your graphics device and choose Properties
   • Under the Driver tab:
     • Click Roll Back Driver if available, or
     • Click Uninstall Device
   • Restart the PC and let Windows reinstall the driver automatically

6. Run system repair commands

   • In Safe Mode or Windows Recovery, open Command Prompt
   • Run these commands one at a time:
     • sfc /scannow
     • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
   • Wait for both scans to finish, then restart

7. Turn off Fast Startup

   • Open Control Panel > Power Options
   • Click Choose what the power buttons do
   • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
   • Uncheck Turn on fast startup
   • Click Save changes and restart
