What Causes This?

High CPU usage after a Windows 11 update usually happens because the system is still finishing post-update work in the background. Services like Windows Update, Search indexing, Microsoft Defender scans, driver reconfiguration, or app compatibility tasks can temporarily push CPU usage much higher than normal. In some cases, the update also resets startup apps, installs a bad driver, or leaves behind temporary files that keep Windows working harder than it should.

Common Symptoms

  • Fans run loudly even when you are not doing much
  • Apps feel slow to open or switch between
  • Task Manager shows CPU usage staying unusually high for long periods
  • The PC becomes hot, laggy, or stutters after a recent update
  • Battery drains faster than normal on a laptop

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check which process is using the CPU

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc
    • Click More details if needed
    • On the Processes tab, click the CPU column to sort by highest usage
    • Look for common causes like Windows Modules Installer Worker, Service Host: Windows Update, Antimalware Service Executable, or a third-party app
    • If a non-essential app is stuck at high CPU, select it and click End task
  2. Restart your PC and give Windows time to finish update tasks

    • Click Start > Power > Restart
    • After signing back in, leave the PC idle for 10-15 minutes while plugged in
    • Open Task Manager again and check whether CPU usage drops
    • If usage is only high for a short time after the update, this may resolve on its own
  3. Pause or complete Windows Update

    • Open Settings > Windows Update
    • Click Check for updates
    • Install anything still pending, including optional driver updates if they are clearly relevant to your hardware
    • Restart when prompted
    • If updates keep looping, click Pause updates temporarily, restart, then check CPU usage again
  4. Disable unnecessary startup apps

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc
    • Go to the Startup apps tab
    • Right-click apps you do not need at boot and choose Disable
    • Focus on launchers, chat apps, RGB tools, and vendor utilities you rarely use
    • Restart your PC
  5. Rebuild Search indexing if Search is causing the issue

    • Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows
    • Scroll down and select Advanced indexing options
    • In the Indexing Options window, click Advanced
    • Under Troubleshooting, click Rebuild
    • This can temporarily use resources, but it often fixes indexing-related CPU spikes afterward
  6. Run System File Checker and DISM

    • Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin)
    • Run these commands one at a time:
      1. sfc /scannow
      2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Wait for both scans to finish, then restart your PC
    • This can repair damaged system files left behind by a problematic update
  7. Check for a bad driver or recent app conflict

    • Right-click Start and choose Device Manager
    • Look for devices with warning icons
    • Expand categories like Display adapters, Network adapters, and Sound, video and game controllers
    • Right-click the device, choose Properties, then check the Driver tab
    • If the problem started right after the update, try Roll Back Driver if available, or uninstall a recently added app from Settings > Apps > Installed apps
