High CPU usage from the Xbox app during gaming usually comes from background services tied to Game Pass, Xbox networking, game installs, cloud sync, or the Game Bar overlay. The app can also keep using CPU if it is stuck checking for updates, syncing saves, verifying files, or refreshing social features in the background. In some cases, corrupted app data, outdated Gaming Services, or conflicts with other overlays make the load worse and cause frame drops.
Common Symptoms
- FPS drops or stutter when the Xbox app is open
- Task Manager shows Xbox, Gaming Services, or Game Bar using high CPU
- Games launch slowly or hitch during downloads or updates
- Fans spin up more than usual while gaming
- CPU usage stays high even after closing the game
How to Fix It Manually
-
Confirm the Xbox app is the problem
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Click Processes and sort by CPU.
- Look for Xbox, Gaming Services, Xbox Game Bar, or Game Bar Presence Writer.
- If one of these spikes while gaming, continue with the steps below.
-
Close Xbox background tasks before launching your game
- In Task Manager, right-click Xbox or Xbox Game Bar and choose End task.
- Also close any active Microsoft Store downloads or updates.
- Reopen only the game you want to play and check if CPU usage improves.
-
Disable Xbox Game Bar if you do not need it
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn off Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller and disable the Game Bar if it is enabled.
- Then go to Gaming > Captures and turn off Record what happened if background recording is on.
- Background capture can use CPU even when you are not actively recording.
-
Stop Xbox app updates, installs, and sync activity
- Open the Xbox app.
- Pause any game downloads, updates, or installs.
- Sign out and back in if the app appears stuck syncing cloud saves.
- If you use the Microsoft Store, open it, click your profile icon > App settings or Library, and make sure it is not updating Xbox-related components in the background.
-
Repair or reset the Xbox app and Gaming Services
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, click the three dots > Advanced options.
- Click Repair first. If that does not help, click Reset.
- Repeat this for Gaming Services.
- Restart your PC after both are repaired or reset.
-
Update Windows, the Xbox app, and your GPU driver
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all pending updates.
- Open the Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates to update Xbox and Gaming Services.
- Update your graphics driver from NVIDIA App, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
- Outdated system components can cause excessive CPU use and poor game performance.
-
Prevent overlay conflicts
- Disable other overlays temporarily, such as Discord overlay, Steam overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, or AMD overlay.
- Test your game again with only the essentials running.
- If CPU usage drops, re-enable overlays one at a time to find the conflict.
