What Causes This?

Discord usually uses more CPU when it is processing voice chat, rendering animations, handling screen share, or decoding video streams. High usage can also happen if hardware acceleration is misbehaving, a corrupted cache is forcing Discord to work harder, or another app is conflicting with Discord in the background. In some cases, an outdated Discord build, graphics driver, or Windows update can make the problem worse.

Common Symptoms

  • Discord shows unusually high CPU usage in Task Manager
  • Your PC fans get louder when Discord is open
  • Voice chat, screen share, or streams start lagging or stuttering
  • Games lose FPS while Discord runs in the background
  • Discord feels slow even when you are idle in a server

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Confirm Discord is the app using CPU

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    • In the Processes tab, look for Discord and check the CPU column.
    • If usage spikes during calls, streaming, or while idle, continue with the steps below.
  2. Turn off Discord hardware acceleration

    • Open Discord.
    • Click the gear icon next to your username to open User Settings.
    • Scroll to Advanced.
    • Turn Hardware Acceleration Off.
    • Click Okay to restart Discord.
    • This often helps when Discord is putting too much load on the CPU or conflicting with your GPU driver.
  3. Disable extra visual and game features

    • In Discord > User Settings, open Voice & Video and turn off features you do not need, such as advanced video options during calls.
    • Go to Game Overlay and switch Enable in-game overlay Off.
    • Open Accessibility and turn off Animate emoji, Play animated emoji, and other motion-heavy effects if enabled.
    • These features can increase CPU usage, especially on older systems.
  4. Clear Discord cache

    • Close Discord completely.
    • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find any Discord processes, right-click them, and choose End task.
    • Press Windows+R, type %appdata%, and press Enter.
    • Open the Discord folder.
    • Delete the folders named Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache.
    • Reopen Discord and test again.
  5. Update Discord, Windows, and your graphics driver

    • To refresh Discord, press Ctrl+R inside the Discord window.
    • For Windows updates, open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • For your GPU driver, update it through NVIDIA App, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
    • Old drivers can cause Discord to rely more heavily on the CPU.
  6. Disable unnecessary startup and background apps

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    • Go to the Startup apps tab.
    • Disable apps you do not need running with Discord, especially overlays, RGB tools, browser helpers, and recording software.
    • Then go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and close or uninstall apps that constantly run in the background.
    • Restart your PC and check Discord again.
  7. Reinstall Discord if the problem continues

    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find Discord, click the three dots, and choose Uninstall.
    • Press Windows+R, type %appdata%, and delete the Discord folder if it remains.
    • Press Windows+R again, type %localappdata%, and delete the Discord folder there too.
    • Download and install a fresh copy of Discord.
