What Causes This?

File Explorer in Windows 11 usually becomes slow or unstable when its cache, history, or thumbnail database gets corrupted or overloaded. It can also happen because of broken shell extensions, bad Quick Access entries, damaged system files, or too much background clutter affecting disk and memory performance. In some cases, a recent update, network location, or external drive can also make Explorer hang or crash.

Common Symptoms

  • File Explorer takes a long time to open folders
  • Explorer freezes, stops responding, or crashes when browsing files
  • Right-click menus open slowly or cause Explorer to restart
  • Quick Access, Recent files, or thumbnails load very slowly
  • Windows taskbar or desktop briefly disappears when Explorer crashes

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart File Explorer

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    • Find Windows Explorer under the Processes tab.
    • Right-click it and select Restart.
    • Check whether File Explorer becomes responsive again.
  2. Clear File Explorer history

    • Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
    • Click the three dots on the toolbar, then choose Options.
    • In the General tab, go to the Privacy section.
    • Click Clear next to Clear File Explorer history.
    • If Quick Access is causing issues, you can also change Open File Explorer to: from Home to This PC.
  3. Rebuild the thumbnail cache

    • Press Windows + R, type cleanmgr, and press Enter.
    • Select your C: drive and click OK.
    • Check Thumbnails in the list.
    • Click OK, then Delete Files.
    • This removes corrupted thumbnail data that can slow folder loading.
  4. Run System File Checker and DISM

    • Click Start, type cmd.
    • Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
    • Run this command: sfc /scannow
    • When it finishes, run these commands one at a time: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Restart your PC after both scans complete.
    • These tools repair damaged Windows files that can cause Explorer crashes.
  5. Disable problematic context menu or shell extensions

    • If Explorer crashes when you right-click files or folders, a third-party extension may be the cause.
    • Try uninstalling recently added apps that integrate with Explorer, such as archive tools, cloud storage apps, or file managers.
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find suspicious or recently installed software, click the three dots, and choose Uninstall.
    • Restart your PC and test Explorer again.
  6. Check external drives and network locations

    • Disconnect USB drives, SD cards, or mapped network drives temporarily.
    • Open File Explorer and see if performance improves.
    • If it does, reconnect items one at a time to find the source of the slowdown.
    • Explorer often hangs when trying to access an unavailable drive or damaged storage device.
  7. Boot clean to rule out background conflicts

    • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    • Open the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services.
    • Click Disable all.
    • Open the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
    • Disable non-essential startup apps, restart your PC, and test File Explorer.
    • If the issue stops, re-enable items gradually to find the conflicting app.
