OneDrive integration problems in Windows 11 File Explorer usually happen when the OneDrive app is out of date, its sync cache is corrupted, or Explorer’s shell components stop loading correctly. In some cases, Windows updates, broken sign-in tokens, or damaged system files can prevent the OneDrive folder, status icons, or context menu options from working as expected. Third-party shell extensions can also interfere with Explorer and make OneDrive appear missing or unresponsive.
Common Symptoms
- OneDrive is missing from the File Explorer sidebar
- Sync status icons do not appear on files and folders
- File Explorer freezes or crashes when opening OneDrive
- Right-click OneDrive options are missing or broken
- OneDrive shows signed in, but files do not sync correctly
How to Fix It Manually
-
Restart File Explorer and OneDrive
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Under the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose Restart.
- Then find Microsoft OneDrive in the list. If it is running, right-click it and choose End task.
- Press Windows+R, type:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exeand press Enter to start OneDrive again.
-
Reset OneDrive
- Press Windows+R to open Run.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset - Wait about 1-2 minutes. If OneDrive does not restart on its own, press Windows+R again and run:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe - Check whether OneDrive returns to the File Explorer navigation pane and sync icons reappear.
-
Make sure OneDrive is signed in and enabled
- Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area. If you do not see it, click the up arrow near the clock.
- If prompted, sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Open Settings in OneDrive, then confirm your account is connected and the folders you expect are selected under Sync and backup or Choose folders.
- Open File Explorer and check whether the OneDrive folder is now visible.
-
Update OneDrive and Windows
- Open Settings with Windows+I.
- Go to Windows Update and click Check for updates. Install any pending updates and restart your PC.
- To update OneDrive, open the OneDrive app from the taskbar icon, go to Help & Settings, and check for updates if the option is available. If OneDrive still behaves oddly, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then reinstall it from Microsoft’s official site.
-
Repair Windows system files
- Click Start, type cmd, then right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
sfc /scannow - After it finishes, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Restart your PC after both scans complete. This can fix damaged Windows components that affect File Explorer integration.
-
Check for shell extension conflicts
- If the problem started after installing file tools, cloud apps, or right-click menu utilities, temporarily uninstall them from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart your PC and test File Explorer again.
- Conflicting shell extensions often cause missing icons, slow right-click menus, and Explorer crashes around OneDrive folders.
