What Causes This?

Windows 11 pushes Microsoft services in several places, especially OneDrive and File Explorer. These prompts usually come from built-in “tips,” sync reminders, backup suggestions, and promotional notifications that are enabled by default. File Explorer can also show Microsoft account and OneDrive upsell messages through its notification settings.

Common Symptoms

  • OneDrive pop-ups asking you to sign in, back up folders, or finish setup
  • File Explorer banners or messages promoting OneDrive or Microsoft services
  • Repeated Windows notifications about syncing Desktop, Documents, or Pictures
  • “Get the most out of Windows” or account-related prompts appearing after updates
  • Ads or suggestions showing up while browsing files and folders

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn off File Explorer notifications

    1. Open File Explorer with Win+E.
    2. Click the three-dot menu on the toolbar, then choose Options.
    3. Open the View tab.
    4. Scroll down and uncheck Show sync provider notifications.
    5. Click Apply, then OK.
  2. Disable OneDrive from starting automatically

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    2. Click Startup apps in the left sidebar.
    3. Find Microsoft OneDrive.
    4. Right-click it and choose Disable.
    5. This stops OneDrive from launching every time you sign in.
  3. Unlink or close OneDrive if you do not use it

    1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray near the clock. If you do not see it, click the up arrow first.
    2. Click the gear icon and choose Settings.
    3. In the Account section, click Unlink this PC if you want to disconnect your Microsoft account from OneDrive.
    4. If you just want it out of the way, right-click the OneDrive tray icon and choose Quit OneDrive.
  4. Turn off Windows suggestions and promotional notifications

    1. Press Win+I to open Settings.
    2. Go to System > Notifications.
    3. Scroll down and click Additional settings.
    4. Turn off:
      • Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested
      • Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device
      • Get tips and suggestions when using Windows
  5. Stop OneDrive backup prompts for common folders

    1. Open the OneDrive app from the Start menu, or click its tray icon and open Settings.
    2. Go to Sync and backup.
    3. Open Manage backup.
    4. Turn off backup for folders like Desktop, Documents, and Pictures if you do not want OneDrive nagging you to protect them.
  6. Uninstall OneDrive entirely if you never use it

    1. Open Settings with Win+I.
    2. Go to Apps > Installed apps.
    3. Search for Microsoft OneDrive.
    4. Click the three dots next to it and choose Uninstall.
    5. Restart your PC after removal.
