File Explorer tabs in Windows 11 usually stop working because Explorer itself has crashed, a recent Windows update did not install correctly, or system files tied to the Explorer shell are corrupted. In some cases, tabs are missing because the PC is running an older Windows 11 build that does not fully support the feature. Temporary files and cached Explorer data can also make File Explorer unstable and lead to tabs freezing, disappearing, or refusing to open.
Common Symptoms
- Clicking the + tab button does nothing
- File Explorer opens, but no tab bar appears at the top
- Tabs open once, then File Explorer freezes or crashes
- File Explorer windows open separately instead of inside tabs
- Tabs disappear after a Windows update or restart
How to Fix It Manually
-
Make sure Windows 11 is fully updated
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install any available updates, then restart your PC.
File Explorer tabs require a newer Windows 11 build, so if updates are missing, the feature may not work at all.
-
Restart Windows Explorer
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- In the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
This refreshes the desktop, taskbar, and File Explorer shell without rebooting the whole PC.
-
Clear File Explorer history
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Click the three dots on the toolbar, then choose Options.
- In the General tab, find the Privacy section.
- Click Clear, then click Apply and OK.
Corrupted recent file and folder history can sometimes interfere with normal Explorer behavior.
-
Run the System File Checker
- Press Windows + S, type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
sfc /scannow - Wait for the scan to complete, then restart your PC.
This checks for damaged Windows system files that can break File Explorer features.
-
Repair the Windows image with DISM
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run these commands one at a time:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Restart your PC after the last command finishes.
If Windows components behind Explorer are damaged, DISM can repair them.
-
Test File Explorer in a clean restart
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- Open the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable all.
- Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
- Disable non-essential startup apps, then restart your PC.
If tabs work after this, a third-party app or shell extension is likely interfering with Explorer.
-
Create a new Windows user account
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Click Add account.
- Create a new local user and sign into that account.
- Open File Explorer and check whether tabs work there.
If they do, the problem is likely tied to your current Windows profile.
