How to Fix Steam Overlay Causing Game Crashes

What Causes This?

Steam Overlay hooks into your game to display the in-game browser, chat, FPS counter, and screenshots. In some games, that extra overlay layer conflicts with DirectX, Vulkan, anti-cheat systems, GPU drivers, or other overlays like Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner, and Xbox Game Bar. The result can be rendering errors, startup crashes, black screens, or sudden game closures when the overlay loads.

Common Symptoms

• The game crashes at launch only when started through Steam
• Crashes happen when pressing Shift + Tab to open the Steam Overlay
• You see a black screen, frozen menu, or sudden return to desktop
• The game runs normally after disabling Steam Overlay
• Crashes are more common when other overlays or recording tools are also running

How to Fix It Manually

1. Disable Steam Overlay for the affected game

   1. Open Steam.
   2. Go to Library.
   3. Right-click the game that keeps crashing and select Properties.
   4. In the General tab, turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
   5. Launch the game again and check if it stays open.

2. Turn off Steam Overlay globally

   1. In Steam, click Steam > Settings.
   2. Select In Game from the left sidebar.
   3. Uncheck Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
   4. Restart Steam, then test the game again.
   5. This helps confirm whether the overlay itself is the cause, not just one game setting.

3. Close other overlay and monitoring apps

   1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
   2. Look for apps such as Discord, NVIDIA GeForce Experience, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, Overwolf, or screen recorders.
   3. Select each one and click End task if you do not need it running.
   4. Try the game again with only Steam open.
   5. If the crash stops, re-enable those apps one at a time to find the conflict.

4. Update your graphics driver

   1. Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
   2. Expand Display adapters.
   3. Right-click your GPU and choose Update driver.
   4. Select Search automatically for drivers.
   5. For best results, also check the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, since Windows does not always install the newest version.
   6. Restart your PC after updating.

5. Verify the game files in Steam

   1. In Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
   2. Open Installed Files.
   3. Click Verify integrity of game files.
   4. Wait for Steam to repair any missing or corrupted files, then relaunch the game.

6. Disable fullscreen optimizations for the game

   1. In Steam, right-click the game and choose Manage > Browse local files.
   2. Find the game’s main .exe file.
   3. Right-click it and select Properties.
   4. Open the Compatibility tab.
   5. Check Disable fullscreen optimizations and click Apply.
   6. Start the game again and see if the crash is gone.

7. Run Steam and the game normally, not as administrator

   1. Right-click the Steam shortcut and choose Properties.
   2. On the Compatibility tab, make sure Run this program as an administrator is unchecked.
   3. Do the same for the game’s .exe file.
   4. Mismatched permissions between Steam, the overlay, and the game can sometimes trigger crashes.
