What Causes This?

Discord’s in-game overlay draws extra graphics on top of your game, which adds GPU and CPU overhead. On lower-end systems, older drivers, or games that already push your hardware hard, that extra layer can cause FPS drops, stuttering, or input lag. The problem gets worse when Discord hardware acceleration, game recording features, or other overlays are running at the same time.

Common Symptoms

  • FPS drops only when Discord is open
  • Stuttering or micro-freezes after opening the overlay
  • Input lag while gaming and chatting
  • Performance gets worse in fullscreen or borderless mode
  • Problems improve as soon as Discord is closed

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn off Discord’s in-game overlay

    1. Open Discord.
    2. Click the gear icon in the bottom-left to open User Settings.
    3. Scroll to Game Overlay.
    4. Turn off Enable in-game overlay.
    5. Fully close Discord, then reopen it and test your game.
  2. Disable overlay for specific games

    1. In Discord, open User Settings.
    2. Go to Registered Games or Game Activity depending on your version.
    3. Find the game giving you trouble.
    4. Click the monitor/overlay icon next to it to disable overlay just for that game.
    5. Launch the game again and check performance.
  3. Turn off Discord hardware acceleration

    1. In Discord, open User Settings.
    2. Scroll to Advanced.
    3. Turn off Hardware Acceleration.
    4. Click Okay or restart Discord if prompted.

This can help if Discord is competing with your game for GPU resources.

  4. Close other overlays and background apps

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    2. On the Processes tab, look for apps that commonly add overlays or capture features, such as:
      • Xbox Game Bar
      • NVIDIA GeForce Experience
      • AMD Adrenalin
      • Steam overlay
      • MSI Afterburner / RivaTuner
      • Browser windows playing video
    3. Select anything non-essential and click End task.
    4. Test the game with only Discord open.
  5. Disable Xbox Game Bar if you do not use it

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.
    3. Turn off Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller and disable the feature if available.
    4. Then go to Gaming > Captures and turn off background recording.
  6. Update your graphics driver

    1. Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
    2. Expand Display adapters.
    3. Right-click your GPU and choose Update driver.
    4. Select Search automatically for drivers.

If Windows does not find a newer one, install the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel directly.

  7. Run Discord and your game in normal mode

    1. Close both Discord and the game.
    2. Right-click the Discord shortcut and choose Properties.
    3. Open the Compatibility tab.
    4. Make sure Run this program as an administrator is unchecked unless your game also uses the same setting.

Mismatched admin permissions can sometimes break overlay behavior and cause performance issues.
