How to Fix AMD Overlay Causing Microstutter in Games

AMD’s Adrenalin overlay can hook into games to show performance metrics, recording controls, Instant Replay, notifications, and hotkeys. On some systems, those extra overlay processes compete for GPU, CPU, or frame timing access, which can lead to microstutter, hitching, or uneven frame pacing. The issue is more common after driver updates, when multiple overlays are enabled at once, or when Radeon features conflict with game-specific settings.

Common Symptoms

• Small stutters every few seconds even when average FPS looks normal
• Frame time spikes when opening the AMD overlay or using overlay hotkeys
• Games feel less smooth with Instant Replay, metrics, or recording enabled
• Hitching gets worse when another overlay is also running, like Discord, Steam, or Xbox Game Bar
• Stutter starts after an AMD driver update or Adrenalin settings change

How to Fix It Manually

1. Turn off the AMD in-game overlay

   1. Right-click your desktop and open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
   2. Click the gear icon in the top-right to open Settings.
   3. Go to Preferences.
   4. Find In-Game Overlay and switch it Off.
   5. Close Adrenalin and test your game again.

2. Disable Instant Replay, recording, and performance metrics

   1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
   2. Go to Record & Stream and turn Instant Replay Off.
   3. Turn off Record Desktop if it is enabled.
   4. Open the Performance tab, then disable any Metrics Overlay or on-screen performance tracking.

   1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and close any unnecessary game helper apps.

   5. Test with only one overlay active, or ideally none.

   1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and go to Gaming.
   2. Select the game that is stuttering.
   3. Temporarily disable features like Radeon Anti-Lag, Radeon Boost, Enhanced Sync, and Chill.
   4. If you changed many settings, use Reset Shader Cache if available under Graphics or Advanced settings.
   5. Launch the game and compare smoothness.

5. Do a clean AMD driver reinstall if the issue started after an update

   1. Press Windows + X and click Installed apps or Apps and Features.
   2. Uninstall AMD Software.
   3. Restart your PC.
   4. Download the latest stable AMD driver for your GPU from AMD’s official support site.
   5. Install it, then open Adrenalin and leave overlay/recording features disabled until you confirm the stutter is gone.

6. Check startup apps and background load

   1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
   2. Open the Startup apps tab and disable non-essential launchers, RGB tools, and capture utilities.
   3. In the Processes tab, look for background apps using high CPU, GPU, or disk while gaming.
   4. Reboot your PC before testing again.
