How to Fix Discord Overlay Not Showing in Games

What Causes This?

Discord’s in-game overlay works by hooking into a game process, so it can fail if Discord doesn’t have the right permissions, the overlay setting is disabled, or another app blocks the hook. Conflicts with game launchers, anti-cheat systems, screen recorders, GPU overlays, or outdated graphics drivers can also stop it from appearing. In some cases, Discord is running in a different privilege level than the game, which prevents the overlay from attaching correctly.

Common Symptoms

• Pressing the Discord overlay shortcut does nothing in-game
• The overlay works in some games but not others
• Voice chat works, but names and controls never appear on screen
• The overlay appeared before, then stopped after a game, driver, or Discord update
• Games stutter, flicker, or minimize when the overlay tries to load

How to Fix It Manually

1. Make sure Discord overlay is enabled

   1. Open Discord.
   2. Click the gear icon next to your username to open User Settings.
   3. In the left sidebar, click Game Overlay.
   4. Turn on Enable in-game overlay.
   5. Check the overlay hotkey and make sure it isn’t set to something you already use in-game.

2. Confirm the game has overlay enabled

   1. In Discord, open User Settings again.
   2. Click Registered Games or Activity Privacy / Game Activity depending on your Discord version.
   3. Find your game in the list.
   4. Make sure the monitor/overlay icon is enabled for that specific game.
   5. If the game is missing, launch it first, then return to Discord and check again.

3. Run Discord and the game with the same permissions

   1. Close Discord completely. Right-click the Discord icon in the system tray and choose Quit Discord.
   2. If your game is launched as administrator, Discord must be too.
   3. Right-click the Discord shortcut and select Run as administrator.
   4. Launch your game the same way you normally do.
   5. If the game is not running as admin, try running both normally instead. Mismatched privilege levels often break overlays.

4. Disable conflicting overlays and capture tools

   1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
   2. Close apps that commonly interfere, such as Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA GeForce Experience overlay, AMD Radeon overlay, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, Steam overlay, or third-party recorders.
   3. You can also disable some of these from their settings menus:
      • Xbox Game Bar: Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and turn it off.
      • Steam Overlay: In Steam, right-click the game > Properties > turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
   4. Test the game again with only Discord running.

5. Update Discord and your graphics driver

   1. In Discord, press Ctrl+R to reload the app and force it to check for updates.
   2. Update your GPU driver from NVIDIA App/GeForce Experience, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
   3. Restart your PC after installing updates.

6. Reset Discord’s overlay behavior

   1. In Discord, go to User Settings > Game Overlay.
   2. Turn Enable in-game overlay off, then back on.
   3. Change the hotkey to something simple like Shift + `.
   4. Restart Discord and relaunch the game.

7. Check whether the game blocks overlays

   1. Some competitive games and anti-cheat protected titles restrict overlays completely.
   2. Test Discord overlay in a different game.
   3. If it works elsewhere, the issue is likely game-specific rather than a Windows problem.
