How to Fix Discord Overlay Not Showing in Games

What Causes This?

Discord’s in-game overlay has to attach to the game process, so it can fail if the overlay is off, Discord cannot detect the game properly, or another app is injecting its own overlay first. Conflicts with anti-cheat, screen recorders, GPU overlays, launcher overlays, or mismatched privilege levels can also stop it from appearing. In some games, overlays are limited or blocked entirely, so the problem may be game-specific rather than a system-wide fault.

Common Symptoms

• Pressing the Discord overlay shortcut does nothing in-game
• The overlay works in some games but not others
• Voice chat works, but names and controls never appear on screen
• The overlay appeared before, then stopped after a game, driver, or Discord update
• Games stutter, flicker, or minimize when the overlay tries to load

How to Fix It Manually

1. Make sure Discord overlay is enabled

   1. Open Discord.
   2. Click the gear icon next to your username to open User Settings.
   3. Open Game Overlay.
   4. Turn on Enable in-game overlay.
   5. Check the overlay hotkey and make sure it is not already used by the game, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, or your GPU software.

2. Confirm the game has overlay enabled

   1. In Discord, open User Settings.
   2. Open Registered Games or Game Activity if that section name differs in your app build.
   3. Find the game in the list.
   4. Make sure the overlay toggle for that game is on.
   5. If the game is missing, start the game first, then switch back to Discord and check again.

3. Run Discord and the game with the same permissions

   1. Close Discord completely from the system tray or menu bar.
   2. If the game is running as administrator on Windows, Discord usually needs to run the same way.
   3. On Windows, right-click the Discord shortcut and select Run as administrator only if the game is also elevated.
   4. If the game is not elevated, run both normally instead.
   5. On macOS and Linux, this is less often a privilege issue, but launching Discord and the game from the same user session still helps rule out access problems.

4. Disable conflicting overlays and capture tools

   1. Close apps that commonly interfere, such as Xbox Game Bar, Steam Overlay, NVIDIA overlay, AMD overlay, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, OBS game capture hooks, or third-party recorders.
   2. On Windows, you can turn off Xbox Game Bar in Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.
   3. In Steam, open the game’s Properties and turn off the Steam overlay for testing.
   4. Test again with Discord as the only active overlay.

5. Update Discord and your graphics driver

   1. In Discord, press Ctrl+R on Windows/Linux or Cmd+R on macOS to reload the app.
   2. If Discord still looks broken, fully quit it and open it again so it can apply any pending update.
   3. Update your GPU driver using your GPU vendor’s current tool or package source.
   4. Restart the PC after the driver update.
   5. On Linux, also make sure you are using the current graphics stack provided by your distro, since old Mesa or proprietary driver packages can affect overlays.

6. Reset Discord’s overlay behavior

   1. In Discord, go to User Settings > Game Overlay.
   2. Turn Enable in-game overlay off, then back on.
   3. Change the hotkey to a simple combination you do not use elsewhere.
   4. Restart Discord and relaunch the game.

7. Check whether the game blocks overlays

   1. Some competitive and anti-cheat protected games restrict overlays completely or only allow certain ones.
   2. Test Discord overlay in a different game.
   3. If it works elsewhere, the issue is probably specific to that game, launcher, or anti-cheat setup.
