What Causes This?

NVIDIA’s in-game overlay can cause microstutter when it hooks into a game to record gameplay, show notifications, track performance, or enable Instant Replay. That extra layer can add small frametime spikes, especially in games that are already CPU-limited or sensitive to background overlays. Conflicts with other overlays like Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, or MSI Afterburner can make the stutter worse.

Common Symptoms

  • Gameplay feels jerky even when FPS looks high
  • Frametime spikes or brief hitches happen during movement or combat
  • Stutter gets worse when notifications, recording, or Instant Replay are enabled
  • Games run smoother after closing GeForce Experience or disabling overlays
  • The issue appears in multiple games, not just one

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn off the NVIDIA in-game overlay

    1. Open NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience from the Start menu.
    2. Click the Settings icon.
    3. Find In-Game Overlay and switch it Off.
    4. Restart the game and test for smoother frametimes.
  2. Disable Instant Replay, recording, and highlights

    1. If you still use the overlay, open it with Alt+Z.
    2. Go to Instant Replay and set it to Off.
    3. Open Settings inside the overlay and disable Highlights and any active recording features.
    4. These features constantly monitor gameplay and can cause background overhead even if you are not actively saving clips.
  3. Close extra overlays that may conflict

    1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
    2. Look for apps that commonly add overlays, such as Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, or browser-based game helpers.
    3. Right-click any non-essential app and choose End task.
    4. You can also disable their overlay features directly:
      • Discord: User Settings > Game Overlay > turn it off
      • Steam: Library > right-click game > Properties > disable Steam Overlay
      • Xbox Game Bar: Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar > turn it off
  4. Stop GeForce Experience from loading at startup

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    2. Click the Startup apps tab.
    3. Find NVIDIA GeForce Experience or related NVIDIA helper entries.
    4. Right-click them and choose Disable if you do not need them running all the time.
    5. Restart your PC and test the game again.
  5. Update or reinstall NVIDIA software if the problem started recently

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to Apps > Installed apps.
    3. Find NVIDIA App, GeForce Experience, or older NVIDIA components tied to overlay features.
    4. If the issue started after an update, reinstall the app or install the latest stable NVIDIA driver from NVIDIA’s website.
    5. During driver install, choose Custom if available and avoid extra optional components you do not use.
  6. Check frametime behavior after each change

    1. Test one game at a time after disabling each feature.
    2. If stutter improves after turning off the overlay, you have confirmed the cause.
    3. Leave only the features you actually use enabled to keep gaming overhead low.
