How to Fix a Steam Game Not Launching or Crashing Immediately

How to Fix It Manually

1. Restart Steam and your PC

   • Restart your PC, then try launching the game again.

2. Verify the game files in Steam

   • Open Steam.
   • Go to Library and right-click the game.
   • Select Properties > Installed Files.
   • Click Verify integrity of game files.
   • Wait for Steam to check and re-download any damaged or missing files.

3. Update your graphics driver and Windows

   • Right-click Start and choose Settings.

   • For your GPU driver:
     • NVIDIA: update through the NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience
     • AMD: update through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
     • Intel: use Intel Driver & Support Assistant
   • Restart your PC after installing updates.

4. Disable overlays and background apps

   • In Steam, go to Steam > Settings > In Game.
   • Turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
   • Also disable overlays from Discord, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, or GeForce Experience if you use them.
   • Open Task Manager and close unnecessary background apps before launching the game.

   • Right-click the Steam shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
   • If the game still fails, browse to the game’s install folder:
     • In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files

6. Repair common game dependencies

   • Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
   • Go to the game folder and look for folders like _CommonRedist, DirectX, or vcredist.
   • Run the installers for DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
   • If Windows reports missing DLL files, reinstalling these packages often fixes the launch problem.

7. Check antivirus and security blocks

   • Open your antivirus or Windows Security.
   • Review Protection history for anything blocked or quarantined related to Steam or the game.
   • Add the Steam folder and the game folder to your antivirus exclusions if needed.
   • If Controlled folder access is enabled in Windows Security, allow Steam and the game executable.

8. Clear Steam download cache

   • In Steam, click Steam > Settings > Downloads.
   • Click Clear Download Cache.
   • Sign back into Steam and test the game again.
   • If nothing helps, uninstall and reinstall just the affected game before reinstalling Steam itself.
