What Causes This?

Xbox Game Bar runs in the background to provide overlays, screen recording, performance widgets, and quick access to Xbox social features. On some PCs, especially lower-end systems or machines already close to their CPU, RAM, or GPU limits, these background features can add extra resource usage during gameplay. The overlay can also interfere with some games, causing stutter, input delay, or frame drops when it appears or records clips.

Common Symptoms

  • FPS drops or stuttering while gaming
  • Lag when opening the Game Bar overlay with Win + G
  • Random slowdowns during gameplay or while recording clips
  • Higher CPU or memory usage from Xbox-related background processes
  • Input delay or brief freezes when notifications appear

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn off Xbox Game Bar in Settings

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Click Gaming.
    3. Select Xbox Game Bar.
    4. Turn off the switch for Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller.
    5. If you see an option to allow Xbox Game Bar to open with Win + G, turn that off too.
  2. Disable background capture

    1. In Settings > Gaming, click Captures.
    2. Turn off Record what happened.
    3. Turn off Record in the background while I’m playing a game if that option appears.
    4. This stops Windows from constantly saving gameplay clips in the background.
  3. Stop Xbox Game Bar from running in the background

    1. Press Windows + I and go to Apps > Installed apps.
    2. Find Xbox Game Bar in the app list.
    3. Click the three-dot menu next to it, then choose Advanced options.
    4. Under Background app permissions, set it to Never.
    5. Under Terminate, click Terminate to stop it right away.
  4. Disable Game Bar startup and related processes

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    2. Click the Startup apps tab.
    3. Look for Xbox-related entries such as Xbox, Gaming Services, or similar helper apps.
    4. If any non-essential Xbox app is enabled at startup, right-click it and choose Disable.
    5. Then check the Processes tab for Xbox Game Bar processes and end them if they are still running.
  5. Restart your PC

    1. Save your work and restart Windows.
    2. Launch your game again and check if performance improves.
    3. If you still notice lag, also test with other overlays disabled, such as Discord, Steam, GeForce Experience, or AMD Adrenalin, since overlay conflicts can stack up.
  6. Optional: Uninstall Xbox Game Bar if you never use it

    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    2. Find Xbox Game Bar.
    3. Click the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall, if that option is available on your version of Windows.
    4. This is the most complete way to stop it from affecting games.
