How to Disable Windows Defender Real-Time Scanning for Game Folders

What Causes This?

Windows Defender’s real-time protection scans files as they are opened, updated, or launched. Modern games constantly read large asset files, update shaders, unpack archives, and write logs, which can trigger extra scanning in the background. On slower drives, heavily modded games, or systems already close to 100% disk or CPU usage, this can cause stutter, longer load times, or brief freezes.

Common Symptoms

• Games stutter when loading new areas, textures, or shaders
• Load times are longer than expected, especially after updates
• CPU or disk usage spikes from Antimalware Service Executable
• Modded games hitch or freeze when launching
• Performance drops happen more often during installs, patches, or first-time startup

How to Fix It Manually

Instead of turning off Defender completely, the safer fix is to exclude specific game folders from real-time scanning.

1. Open Windows Security

   • Press Start, type Windows Security, then open it.
   • Click Virus & threat protection.

2. Open Defender settings

   • Under Virus & threat protection settings, click Manage settings.
   • Scroll down to Exclusions and click Add or remove exclusions.

3. Add your game folder as an exclusion

   • Click Add an exclusion.
   • Choose Folder.
   • Browse to the game’s install folder, then click Select Folder.
   • Common locations include:
     • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\
     • C:\Program Files\Epic Games\
     • C:\XboxGames\
     • A custom library on another drive such as D:\Games\

4. Exclude only the specific game, not your whole drive

   • If possible, select the exact game folder instead of the entire Steam or Epic library.
   • Example: exclude D:\Games\Elden Ring rather than D:\Games.
   • This reduces scanning overhead while keeping the rest of your system protected.

5. Add related folders if needed

   • Some games also stutter because Defender scans shader caches, mod folders, or launchers.
   • If the issue continues, add folders such as:
     • The game’s mods folder
     • The launcher cache folder
     • The game’s documents folder in C:\Users\YourName\Documents\My Games\
   • Only exclude folders you recognize and trust.

6. Test the game again

   • Restart the game after adding the exclusion.
   • If you want to confirm Defender was involved, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then watch CPU and Disk usage while launching the game.
   • If Antimalware Service Executable no longer spikes as hard, the exclusion likely helped.

7. Do not disable real-time protection system-wide unless you must

   • In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings, you can temporarily turn off Real-time protection, but this lowers security for your whole PC.
   • Use this only as a short test, then turn it back on immediately.
   • For most users, folder exclusions are the better long-term fix.
