What Causes This?

After a Windows 11 upgrade, some drivers may go missing because the upgrade replaces, disables, or fails to migrate older hardware drivers correctly. This is common with graphics, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, chipset, and printer drivers, especially on older PCs or systems using manufacturer-specific drivers. In some cases, Windows installs a generic driver that works poorly, or leftover files from old drivers create conflicts with the new version.

Common Symptoms

  • No sound, no Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth stops working after the upgrade
  • Screen resolution looks wrong or graphics performance drops
  • Devices show a yellow warning icon in Device Manager
  • Printers, webcams, or USB devices are no longer detected
  • Windows reports that a driver is missing or unavailable

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check which device is missing a driver

    • Press Windows + X and click Device Manager.
    • Look for devices with a yellow triangle or listed under Other devices.
    • Right-click the problem device and select Properties.
    • On the General tab, note the error message and device name.
  2. Run Windows Update for driver updates

    • Open Settings with Windows + I.
    • Go to Windows Update > Check for updates.
    • Install any available updates, then click Advanced options > Optional updates.
    • Open Driver updates and install anything related to the missing device.
    • Restart your PC.
  3. Reinstall the driver from Device Manager

    • Open Device Manager again.
    • Right-click the affected device and choose Uninstall device.
    • If you see Attempt to remove the driver for this device, check it only if you plan to reinstall the correct driver right away.
    • Click Uninstall, then restart your PC.
    • After reboot, Windows may automatically reinstall the driver.
  4. Download the correct driver from the PC or hardware maker

    • Find your PC model by pressing Windows + R, typing msinfo32, and pressing Enter.
    • Note the System Model and BaseBoard Product if needed.
    • Visit your laptop or motherboard manufacturer’s support page and search for your exact model.
    • Download Windows 11 drivers for the missing device, such as graphics, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or chipset.
    • Run the installer, then restart your PC.
  5. Use Hardware IDs if Windows cannot identify the device

    • In Device Manager, right-click the unknown device and select Properties.
    • Go to the Details tab.
    • From the Property dropdown, choose Hardware Ids.
    • Copy the top value and search it on the manufacturer’s site or support page to identify the correct driver.
  6. Remove old driver leftovers causing conflicts

    • Press Windows + X and click Device Manager.
    • Click View > Show hidden devices.
    • Expand categories like Display adapters, Network adapters, and Sound, video and game controllers.
    • Right-click old greyed-out devices you no longer use and select Uninstall device.
    • Be careful not to remove active hardware you still need.
  7. Check system files if drivers still fail to install

    • Press Windows + S, type cmd, then click Run as administrator for Command Prompt.
    • Run this command:
      sfc /scannow
    • After it finishes, restart your PC and try installing the driver again.
