How to Roll Back From Windows 11 to Windows 10 After a Bad Upgrade

What Causes This?

A bad Windows 11 upgrade usually happens when your PC has driver conflicts, incompatible software, missing system files, or hardware that doesn’t work well with the newer version. In many cases, Windows keeps your previous Windows 10 installation for a limited time so you can roll back, but that option can fail if the rollback files were deleted, corrupted, or cleaned up automatically. Problems can also start after the upgrade if performance drops, apps stop working, or Windows 11 becomes unstable.

Common Symptoms

• Your PC became slow, unstable, or freezes after upgrading to Windows 11
• Important apps, drivers, or devices stopped working properly
• You see crashes, blue screens, or repeated startup problems
• The Go back option appears in Recovery settings, but the upgrade is causing too many issues
• You want to return to Windows 10 before the rollback window expires

How to Fix It Manually

1. Check if the built-in rollback option is still available

   • Press Windows + I to open Settings
   • Go to System > Recovery
   • Look for Go back under Recovery options
   • If it’s available, click Go back and continue to Step 2
   • If it’s grayed out or missing, skip to Step 6

2. Start the rollback to Windows 10

   • When Windows asks why you’re going back, choose the reason that best matches your issue
   • Click Next
   • If prompted to check for updates, choose No, thanks if you want to roll back immediately
   • Read the warnings carefully, then click Next

3. Prepare your PC before confirming

   • Make sure your laptop is plugged in or your desktop has stable power
   • Save any open work and close all apps
   • If you changed your account password after upgrading, make sure you still know your old Windows 10 password
   • Click Next, then select Go back to Windows 10

4. Wait for Windows to restore the previous version

   • Your PC will restart several times during the process
   • Do not turn off the PC while rollback is running
   • Once you’re back in Windows 10, sign in and check that your files and apps are available

5. Remove leftover Windows 11 installation files

   • Press Windows + E and confirm your files are present first
   • Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files
   • Check items such as Previous Windows installation(s), Windows upgrade log files, and other upgrade leftovers you no longer need
   • Click Remove files
   • You can also run Disk Cleanup by pressing Windows + S, typing Disk Cleanup, selecting drive C:, then clicking Clean up system files

6. If the Go Back option is unavailable, reinstall Windows 10

   • Back up your personal files to an external drive or cloud storage
   • Visit Microsoft’s official Windows 10 download page from a working browser
   • Download the Media Creation Tool
   • Run it and choose Upgrade this PC now or create a bootable USB if Windows 11 is too unstable to use normally
   • Follow the prompts to reinstall Windows 10
   • After installation, reinstall drivers and apps, then restore your backup

7. Check for driver and system issues after rollback

   • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager
   • Look for devices with a yellow warning icon and update those drivers
   • Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates for Windows 10
   • Restart your PC and confirm the original problem is gone
