Fix Windows 11 Focus Sessions and Do Not Disturb Not Working

What Causes This?

Focus Sessions and Do Not Disturb in Windows 11 usually stop working because notification settings, Clock app settings, or system services are misconfigured. In some cases, background apps, third-party notification tools, or corrupted app data interfere with how Windows handles alerts and focus rules. Outdated Windows builds can also cause Focus features to fail or not trigger correctly.

Common Symptoms

• Focus Sessions will not start or ends immediately
• Do Not Disturb turns off by itself or never activates
• Notifications still appear during a focus session
• The Clock app shows errors or does not sync with Focus Sessions
• Automatic rules for gaming, fullscreen apps, or certain times do not work

How to Fix It Manually

1. Make sure Do Not Disturb is enabled correctly

   1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
   2. Go to System > Notifications.
   3. Turn Do not disturb On.
   4. Click Turn on do not disturb automatically.
   5. Check the rules you want, such as:
      • During these times
      • When duplicating your display
      • When playing a game
      • When using an app in full-screen mode
   6. If a rule is already enabled, turn it off and back on to refresh it.

2. Check Focus settings in the Clock app

   1. Open Start, type Clock, and open the app.
   2. Select Focus sessions.
   3. Try starting a short session manually.
   4. If it fails, click your profile/settings inside the Clock app and make sure any linked services load properly.
   5. If the app seems broken, go to the next step and repair it.

3. Repair or reset the Clock app

   1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
   2. Find Clock, click the three dots, then choose Advanced options.
   3. Click Repair and test Focus Sessions again.
   4. If it still does not work, return to the same screen and click Reset.
   5. Reopen the Clock app and test again.

4. Restart Windows Explorer and notification-related processes

   1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
   2. In the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer.
   3. Right-click it and choose Restart.
   4. Then restart your PC to reload notification services cleanly.

5. Check notification permissions

   1. Open Settings > System > Notifications.
   2. Make sure Notifications are turned On.
   3. Scroll down and confirm important apps are allowed to send notifications.
   4. If notifications are globally disabled, Focus and Do Not Disturb may not behave normally.

6. Update Windows 11

   1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
   2. Click Check for updates.
   3. Install any pending updates, especially cumulative updates for Windows 11.
   4. Restart your PC after installing them.

7. Look for third-party conflicts

   1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and go to the Startup apps tab.
   2. Disable non-essential apps that manage overlays, notifications, gaming tools, or desktop enhancements.
   3. Restart your PC and test Focus Sessions again.
   4. If it starts working, one of those background apps was likely interfering.
