What Causes This?

DirectStorage on Windows 11 depends on several pieces working together: a supported NVMe SSD, a DirectX 12-capable GPU, current storage and graphics drivers, and the right Windows features enabled. If any of these are missing, outdated, or misconfigured, DirectStorage may show as unavailable or games may not use it properly. In some cases, the issue is simply that the game does not support DirectStorage, even if your PC does.

Common Symptoms

  • DirectStorage shows as unsupported in Xbox Game Bar or system info
  • Games have slow loading times despite being installed on an NVMe SSD
  • A game warns that DirectStorage is unavailable
  • Windows 11 is installed, but storage acceleration features do not appear active
  • GPU or SSD drivers are outdated or missing

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check whether your PC meets DirectStorage requirements

    • Press Windows + G to open Xbox Game Bar.
    • Click the Settings gear, then look for Gaming Features.
    • Check the status for:
      • DirectX 12 Ultimate-compatible GPU
      • NVMe SSD
      • DirectStorage supported
    • If one of these shows as unavailable, that points to the part causing the problem.
  2. Make sure your game is installed on an NVMe SSD

    • Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
    • Go to This PC and identify the drive where the game is installed.
    • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    • Expand Disk drives and confirm your storage device is listed as NVMe.
    • If the game is installed on a SATA SSD or hard drive, move or reinstall it to the NVMe drive.
  3. Update Windows 11 fully

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Windows Update.
    • Click Check for updates.
    • Install all available updates, including optional driver or platform updates if offered.
    • Restart your PC after updates finish.
  4. Update your graphics driver

    • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    • Expand Display adapters.
    • Right-click your GPU and choose Update driver.
    • Select Search automatically for drivers.
    • For best results, also download the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, then install it and restart.
  5. Update your NVMe/storage controller driver

    • In Device Manager, expand Storage controllers.
    • Right-click your NVMe or storage controller device and choose Update driver.
    • Select Search automatically for drivers.
    • If your PC or motherboard maker provides a newer storage or chipset driver, install that version instead.
    • Restart the PC when finished.
  6. Enable Game Mode and hardware acceleration features

    • Open Settings with Windows + I.
    • Go to Gaming > Game Mode and make sure Game Mode is turned On.
    • Then go to System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings.
    • Turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling if your system supports it.
    • Restart your PC after changing the setting.
  7. Confirm the game actually supports DirectStorage

    • Check the game’s official system requirements or patch notes.
    • Not every Windows 11 game uses DirectStorage.
    • If your hardware is compatible but only one game has the issue, the problem may be with that game rather than Windows.
