Slow startup on Windows usually happens when too many apps and background services launch at the same time. Temporary files, leftover junk, and old software can also make Windows take longer to load. In some cases, low disk space or a failing hard drive can make boot times much worse.
Common Symptoms
- Windows takes much longer than usual to reach the desktop
- Startup apps like chat tools, game launchers, or cloud sync programs open slowly
- The PC feels frozen or unresponsive for the first few minutes after sign-in
- The disk usage stays high in Task Manager right after boot
- You see spinning dots or a black screen for an unusually long time
How to Fix It Manually
-
Disable unnecessary startup apps
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Click More details if you only see the simple view.
- Open the Startup apps tab.
- Look for apps with High impact that you do not need at boot.
- Right-click each one and choose Disable.
- Leave security software, touchpad drivers, audio drivers, and anything from Microsoft enabled unless you are sure it is safe to disable.
-
Check which apps are slowing startup
- In the Startup apps tab, review the Startup impact column.
- Focus on disabling non-essential items such as game launchers, chat apps, printer tools, Adobe updaters, and manufacturer utilities you do not use.
- Restart your PC after making changes to see if startup improves.
-
Clean up temporary files
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage > Temporary files.
- Let Windows scan, then select items like Temporary files, Recycle Bin, and Thumbnails.
- Avoid deleting Downloads unless you have checked it first.
- Click Remove files.
-
Free up disk space
- In Settings > System > Storage, check how much free space is left on your system drive.
- If the drive is nearly full, uninstall apps you no longer use from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Aim to keep several GB of free space available so Windows can update and run normally.
-
Run Disk Cleanup
- Press Windows key, type Disk Cleanup, and open it.
- Select your C: drive and click OK.
- Check items such as Temporary Internet Files, DirectX Shader Cache, and Temporary files.
- Click OK, then Delete Files.
-
Check your drive health
- Open Command Prompt as administrator: press Windows key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk C: /f - If prompted to schedule the scan for the next restart, type Y and restart your PC.
- If you use an older HDD instead of an SSD, slow startup may also be caused by aging hardware.
-
Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install anything pending.
- Restart when finished. Some startup issues are caused by outdated drivers or Windows bugs that updates fix.
