What Causes This?

Fast Startup combines a normal shutdown with hibernation so Windows can boot faster, but it can also preserve bad power-state data, outdated drivers, or corrupted system files between restarts. If hardware drivers, Windows updates, or disk errors interfere with that saved session, your PC may boot inconsistently or fail to shut down and start up properly. In some cases, too many startup items or system clutter can make Fast Startup behavior less reliable.

Common Symptoms

  • The PC hangs on a black screen or spinning dots during boot
  • Windows starts slowly even though Fast Startup is enabled
  • The computer won’t fully shut down or restarts unexpectedly
  • USB devices, Wi-Fi, audio, or Bluetooth stop working after startup
  • Problems disappear after a full restart but return after a shutdown

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn Fast Startup off temporarily

    1. Press Windows key + S, type control panel, and open it.
    2. Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
    3. Click Choose what the power buttons do.
    4. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    5. Under Shutdown settings, uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
    6. Click Save changes.
    7. Shut down the PC fully, then turn it back on and test whether the issue is gone.
  2. Perform a full restart instead of a shutdown

    1. Click Start > Power > Restart.
    2. A restart does not use Fast Startup, so this helps confirm whether Fast Startup is the cause.
    3. If the PC works normally after restarting but not after shutting down, Fast Startup is likely involved.
  3. Update critical device drivers

    1. Press Windows key + X and choose Device Manager.
    2. Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    3. Right-click important devices and select Update driver.
    4. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
    5. Also check your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s website for newer chipset, storage, and graphics drivers, since these often affect boot behavior.
  4. Repair Windows system files

    1. Press Windows key + S, type cmd.
    2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
    3. Run this command:
      sfc /scannow
    4. After it finishes, run:
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    5. Restart your PC and test again.
  5. Check the disk for errors

    1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
    2. Run:
      chkdsk C: /f
    3. If prompted to schedule the scan at the next restart, type Y and press Enter.
    4. Restart the PC and let the scan complete.
  6. Reduce startup conflicts

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    2. Click the Startup apps tab.
    3. Disable non-essential apps with a high startup impact.
    4. Restart the PC and check whether boot behavior improves.
  7. Leave Fast Startup disabled if it keeps causing issues If your PC is stable with Fast Startup turned off, it is usually better to leave it disabled than keep troubleshooting recurring boot problems. The boot time difference is often small on modern SSD-based systems.
