Delayed startup programs usually happen when too many apps compete for system resources during sign-in, or when Windows is set to stagger startup tasks in the background. High-impact startup apps, background services, outdated software, and slow storage can all make programs open late or in the wrong order. In some cases, startup entries are broken or duplicated, so apps wait, fail silently, or launch long after the desktop appears.
Common Symptoms
- Apps you expect at login open several minutes later
- Startup programs load in a random or inconsistent order
- The desktop appears quickly, but icons and background apps keep loading afterward
- Windows feels sluggish for the first few minutes after signing in
- Some apps launch at startup only occasionally
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check which startup apps are enabled
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Click Startup apps in the left sidebar on Windows 11, or the Startup tab on Windows 10.
- Look at the Startup impact column.
- Right-click any app you do not need immediately after sign-in and choose Disable.
-
Turn off unnecessary background startup from Settings
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Go to Apps > Startup.
- Review the list of apps allowed to start automatically.
- Turn off anything non-essential, especially launchers, chat apps, updaters, and utilities you do not use every day.
-
Check the Startup folders for old or duplicate shortcuts
- Press Windows + R, type
shell:startup, and press Enter. - Remove shortcuts for apps you no longer want launching at sign-in.
- Then press Windows + R, type
shell:common startup, and press Enter. - Remove duplicate or outdated shortcuts there too. Be careful not to delete files unless you know what they belong to.
- Press Windows + R, type
-
Review Scheduled Tasks that trigger at logon
- Press Windows + S, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Click Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for tasks with triggers such as At log on or At startup.
- If you find third-party app tasks you do not need, right-click and choose Disable. Do not disable Microsoft or hardware-related tasks unless you are sure.
-
Update or reinstall apps that start late
- Open the app that is loading slowly and check for updates in its settings menu.
- If the app still starts unpredictably, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart your PC, then install the latest version.
- Broken startup entries are common after incomplete updates.
-
Run a clean boot test
- Press Windows + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
- Go to the Startup section and open Task Manager, then disable all startup apps temporarily.
- Restart your PC. If startup improves, re-enable apps and services a few at a time to find the one causing the delay.
- Press Windows + R, type
-
Check your disk and system files if startup is still slow
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait for it to finish. - Then run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. - If you use an older hard drive instead of an SSD, delayed startup can also be caused by slow disk performance.
