What Causes This?

Windows shows tips, tricks, suggestions, and recommendation prompts when certain personalization and diagnostic features are enabled. These prompts are often tied to how Windows tracks usage patterns, app activity, and setup behavior so it can surface “helpful” suggestions in places like Settings, the Start menu, notifications, and the lock screen. If these options are left on after setup or after a major Windows update, the prompts can keep coming back.

Common Symptoms

  • Windows shows pop-up suggestions about features, apps, or settings you should try
  • You see recommendation cards or “finish setting up your device” messages in Settings
  • The Start menu or notification area displays unwanted tips and prompts
  • Windows feels more intrusive after an update or first sign-in
  • You want less telemetry-driven personalization and fewer system suggestions

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Open Windows Settings.

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Turn off Windows tips and suggestions in Notifications.

    • In Windows 11, go to System > Notifications.
    • Scroll down and expand Additional settings.
    • Uncheck:
      • Offer suggestions on how I can set up my device
      • Get tips and suggestions when using Windows
    • If you see Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in, turn that off too.
  3. Disable suggested content in Settings.

    • In Settings, go to Privacy & security > General.
    • Turn off options such as:
      • Show me suggested content in the Settings app
      • Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID
      • Let websites show me locally relevant content by accessing my language list if you want fewer personalized prompts overall
  4. Turn off Start menu recommendations.

    • In Windows 11, go to Settings > Personalization > Start.
    • Turn off:
      • Show recently added apps
      • Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer
      • If available, disable recommendation-related Start options to reduce suggested content.
  5. Disable lock screen tips and fun facts.

    • Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
    • If Windows spotlight is selected, switch to Picture or Slideshow.
    • Turn off Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen if the option appears.
  6. Stop setup reminders and account prompts.

    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info or Accounts > Email & accounts.
    • Also check Settings > System > Notifications > Additional settings again for setup reminders.
    • Disable prompts that encourage device setup completion, Microsoft services, or account-based recommendations where available.
  7. Restart your PC.

    • Click Start > Power > Restart.
    • After restarting, use Windows normally for a while and confirm the tips and suggestions no longer appear.
