Windows Activity History and Timeline are tied to privacy and account sync settings. On some systems, Windows stores app usage, files, and browsing-related activity locally, and older versions of Windows 10 could also sync parts of that history to your Microsoft account. This usually happens because the default privacy settings were left enabled during setup, or because you signed in with a Microsoft account and allowed cross-device features.
Common Symptoms
- Windows shows recent apps, documents, or activities across devices
- You see privacy settings related to Activity History turned on
- Your PC appears to be sending usage data to Microsoft services
- Timeline or recent activity lists feel more detailed than expected
- You want to reduce tracking or limit what Windows remembers
How to Fix It Manually
-
Open Windows Settings.
- Press
Windows + Ito open Settings. - Click Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Privacy on Windows 10.
- Press
-
Open the Activity History settings.
- In Windows 11, go to Activity history.
- In Windows 10, scroll down the left pane and click Activity history.
-
Turn off activity history collection.
- Look for options such as Store my activity history on this device or similar.
- Turn that setting Off if it is available.
- On older Windows 10 versions, uncheck:
- Let Windows collect my activities from this PC
- Let Windows sync my activities from this PC to the cloud
-
Stop Microsoft account-based syncing where applicable.
- If you see any sync-related option for activity history, switch it Off.
- If your PC uses a Microsoft account, you can also review sync settings under Settings > Accounts > Windows backup or Sync your settings and disable anything you do not want shared across devices.
-
Clear existing activity history.
- In the same Activity history page, find Clear activity history.
- Click Clear and confirm.
- This removes stored activity history from the device and, where supported, requests deletion of associated history linked to your account.
-
Review your Microsoft privacy dashboard.
- Open your browser and go to the Microsoft privacy dashboard by visiting
account.microsoft.com/privacy. - Sign in with your Microsoft account.
