What Causes This?

Windows 10 and 11 include a built-in Clipboard History feature that saves recently copied text, links, and images so you can paste older items later. If Sync across your devices is also turned on, some clipboard content can be uploaded to your Microsoft account and shared between signed-in PCs. This usually happens because the feature was enabled during setup, after signing into a Microsoft account, or by changing clipboard settings without realizing the privacy impact.

Common Symptoms

  • Pressing Windows + V shows a list of previously copied items
  • Copied text or images appear on another Windows device you use
  • Sensitive information stays available in clipboard history after you expected it to be gone
  • Windows shows clipboard sync or history options as enabled in Settings
  • You want copied content to stay local and temporary, but it keeps being saved

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Open Clipboard settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • In Windows 11, go to System > Clipboard.
    • In Windows 10, go to System > Clipboard.
  2. Turn off Clipboard History

    • Find Clipboard history.
    • Switch it to Off.
    • This stops Windows from saving multiple copied items for later use with Windows + V.
  3. Turn off Cloud Sync

    • In the same Clipboard settings page, find Sync across your devices.
    • Switch it to Off.
    • If you see options like Automatically sync text that I copy, disable those too.
  4. Clear anything already stored

    • Still on the Clipboard settings page, look for Clear clipboard data.
    • Click Clear.
    • This removes saved clipboard history from the current device.
    • If sync was previously enabled, repeat these steps on your other Windows devices too.
  5. Check with the clipboard shortcut

    • Press Windows + V.
    • If Clipboard History is disabled, Windows should show a message saying it can’t display history until the feature is turned on.
    • That confirms the setting is off.
  6. Sign out of other synced PCs if needed

    • If clipboard items are still appearing on another device, open Settings > Accounts on that PC.
    • Make sure it is using the correct Microsoft account.
    • Then go to System > Clipboard on that device and disable Clipboard history and Sync across your devices there as well.
  7. Optional: use Group Policy on Pro editions

    • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
    • Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > OS Policies.
    • Open Allow Clipboard History and set it to Disabled.
    • Open Allow Clipboard synchronization across devices and set it to Disabled.
    • Restart your PC.
