How to Disable Cortana Data Collection and Cloud Search History

What Causes This?

Cortana and Windows Search can store personal data in your Microsoft account to power cloud-based features like search history, personalized results, reminders, and cross-device suggestions. If you signed into Windows with a Microsoft account, these settings may be enabled by default or left on from older Windows versions where Cortana was more deeply integrated. In some cases, local privacy settings are turned off, but cloud search history and account-level data collection remain active online.

Common Symptoms

• Search results in Start or Windows Search include web results and personalized suggestions
• Cortana or Search remembers past queries, interests, or reminders
• Privacy dashboards show stored search activity or voice-related data
• Windows keeps syncing search-related preferences across devices
• You want less Microsoft data collection but are not sure which settings to change

How to Fix It Manually

1. Turn off cloud-powered search in Windows Settings

   1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
   2. In Windows 10, go to Search > Permissions & History.
      In Windows 11, go to Privacy & security > Search permissions.
   3. Turn off options related to:
      • Cloud content search
      • Search history on this device if you do not want local history saved
      • Any setting that allows Microsoft account or work account cloud results
   4. If available, click Clear device search history.

2. Disable search highlights and extra online content

   1. Stay in Search settings.
   2. Turn off Search highlights if it is enabled.
   3. This reduces extra suggested content and Microsoft-fed search items in the search panel.

3. Clear Microsoft account search and activity data

   1. Open your browser and go to the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard at: https://account.microsoft.com/privacy
   2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on your PC.
   3. Look for sections such as Search history, Activity history, or Voice activity.
   4. Choose Clear all or remove the stored data categories you do not want Microsoft to keep.
   5. If available, turn off future collection for those activity types.

4. Review Cortana permissions and disable it if you do not use it

   1. Press Windows + I and open Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10).
   2. Find Cortana.
   3. Open Advanced options if available.
   4. Set its background permissions to Never or disable background activity.
   5. If your version of Windows allows it, turn Cortana off from startup:
      • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc
      • Select the Startup tab
      • Right-click Cortana and choose Disable

5. Turn off diagnostic and personalization features tied to data collection

   1. Open Settings > Privacy & security (or Privacy in Windows 10).
   2. Check Diagnostics & feedback and disable optional diagnostic data.
   3. Open General under privacy settings and turn off options related to personalized ads, app tracking, and suggested content where possible.

6. Restart your PC

   1. Click Start > Power > Restart.
   2. After rebooting, test Windows Search again and confirm that web suggestions, saved history, and Cortana-related personalization are reduced.
