What Causes This?

Windows uses location services to help apps like Maps, Weather, Find My Device, and browsers show local results. To do that, it can store a recent location history on your PC and allow apps or system features to access your device location in the background.

If location tracking is enabled, Windows may keep collecting location data until you turn it off or clear the stored history. In some cases, app permissions, browser settings, or a Microsoft account feature can make it seem like location tracking is still active even after changing one setting.

Common Symptoms

  • Apps like Weather, Maps, or widgets keep showing your current area automatically
  • Windows asks for location access more often than expected
  • You notice Location services is turned on in Settings
  • Find My Device or other apps can still detect your device location
  • You want to remove stored location data for privacy reasons

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Open Windows Location settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • In Windows 11, go to Privacy & security > Location.
    • In Windows 10, go to Privacy > Location.
  2. Clear stored location history

    • Scroll to the Location history section.
    • Click Clear.
    • This removes the location history stored on the device for the local account and apps using Windows location services.
  3. Turn off Location services completely

    • In the same Location settings page, find Location services.
    • Switch it Off.
    • This prevents Windows and most apps from accessing your current device location.
  4. Disable location access for specific apps if you do not want to turn it off system-wide

    • Leave Location services on only if needed.
    • Scroll to Let apps access your location and switch it Off to block app access.
    • Or review the app list below and turn off location access one app at a time for apps like Maps, Weather, or Camera.
  5. Turn off desktop app location access

    • On the same page, look for Let desktop apps access your location.
    • Switch it Off if you do not want traditional desktop programs to use location data.
    • This can affect browsers or other non-Microsoft Store apps.
  6. Check Find My Device settings

    • Go back to Settings and open Privacy & security > Find my device on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Find my device on Windows 10.
    • Turn Find my device Off if you do not want Windows to save your device’s location for recovery purposes.
  7. Review browser location permissions

    • In browsers like Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, open Settings and search for Location or Site permissions.
    • Remove allowed sites or block location access if websites are still detecting your location.
    • This is important because browser-based location requests can continue even after changing some Windows settings.
  8. Restart your PC and verify the change

    • Restart Windows.
    • Go back to Settings > Location and confirm Location services is off and history has been cleared.
    • Open any app that previously used location and check whether it still detects your area.
