Browser notification spam usually starts when a website tricks you into clicking Allow on a notification prompt. Once permission is granted, that site can push pop-ups, fake virus alerts, scam messages, and ads directly to your desktop through Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. In some cases, unwanted browser extensions, adware, or leftover temporary files make the problem worse by reopening bad sites or restoring unwanted settings.
Common Symptoms
- Pop-up alerts keep appearing in the bottom-right corner of Windows, even when the browser is closed
- Notifications claim your PC is infected, expired, or needs urgent action
- Clicking the alerts opens random shopping, gambling, scam, or fake support pages
- Your browser homepage, search engine, or new tab page changes unexpectedly
- You notice unknown extensions or unusually high browser activity
How to Fix It Manually
-
Turn off notification permissions in your browser
- Google Chrome
- Open Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and choose Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications.
- Under Allowed to send notifications, remove any suspicious sites by clicking the three dots next to them and selecting Remove or Block.
- Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu > Settings.
- Go to Cookies and site permissions > Notifications.
- Under Allow, remove or block any site you do not recognize.
- Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox.
- Click the menu button > Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to Permissions and find Notifications.
- Click Settings..., then remove suspicious websites or set them to Block.
- Google Chrome
-
Disable suspicious browser extensions
- In Chrome or Edge, open the menu and go to Extensions > Manage Extensions.
- In Firefox, press Ctrl+Shift+A to open Add-ons and themes.
- Remove anything you did not install intentionally, especially coupon tools, video downloaders, “search helpers,” or unknown security extensions.
-
Reset your browser settings if spam continues
- Chrome: Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults
- Edge: Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values
- Firefox: Type
about:supportin the address bar, then click Refresh Firefox - This can clear bad notification settings, startup pages, and unwanted changes.
-
Check for unwanted apps in Windows
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older versions).
- Sort by Install date and uninstall anything suspicious, especially software installed around the time the spam started.
-
Clear browser cache and temporary files
- In your browser, press Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
- Choose Cached images and files and Cookies/site data, then clear them.
- This helps remove leftover site data that may keep reloading unwanted content.
-
Run a Windows security scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Go to Virus & threat protection and click Quick scan.
- If the issue seems persistent, run a Full scan to check for adware or unwanted programs.
