What Causes This?

Adware usually gets installed with free software, fake browser updates, shady extensions, or misleading download buttons. Once installed, it can change your browser settings, inject ads into pages, redirect searches, or run background processes that keep restoring the unwanted behavior. In some cases, the problem is a malicious browser extension; in others, it is a Windows app or scheduled task that keeps putting the ads back.

Common Symptoms

  • Ads appear on websites that normally do not show them
  • Pop-ups, banners, or “sponsored” boxes show up on nearly every page
  • Your homepage, new tab page, or default search engine changes without permission
  • Browser redirects send you to unfamiliar sites or fake warning pages
  • The problem affects more than one browser on the same PC

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Uninstall suspicious apps from Windows

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps.
    • Sort by Install date and look for anything you do not recognize, especially programs installed around the time the ads started.
    • Click the ... menu next to a suspicious app and choose Uninstall.
    • Remove obvious adware, “browser assistant” tools, fake cleaners, coupon apps, or unknown PDF/download managers.
  2. Remove suspicious browser extensions

    • In Chrome, open chrome://extensions
    • In Edge, open edge://extensions
    • In Firefox, open about:addons
    • Disable and remove any extension you did not intentionally install or no longer trust.
    • Pay close attention to extensions with permissions to “Read and change all your data on websites.”
  3. Reset browser settings if ads continue

    • Chrome: Go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults
    • Edge: Go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values
    • Firefox: Type about:support in the address bar, then click Refresh Firefox
    • This removes unwanted startup pages, search engine changes, and temporary browser modifications.
  4. Check startup apps and running processes

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Click the Startup apps tab and disable unknown items you do not need.
    • In the Processes tab, look for suspicious apps using memory or network activity.
    • Right-click a suspicious process and choose Open file location to see where it is running from. If it points to an odd folder in AppData or Temp, that is a red flag.
  5. Scan for malware with Windows Security

    • Press Windows + I, then go to Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
    • Click Scan options.
    • Run a Full scan.
    • If the problem keeps returning, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan to catch threats that hide while Windows is running.
  6. Check scheduled tasks and shortcuts

    • Press Windows + S, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
    • Review Task Scheduler Library for tasks with random names or ones that launch browsers or scripts at logon.
    • Delete tasks that clearly belong to adware.
    • Then right-click your browser shortcut, choose Properties, and check the Target field. It should end with the browser executable only, not a website URL or extra command.
  7. Clear notifications and site permissions

    • In your browser settings, open Site settings or Cookies and site permissions.
    • Check Notifications and remove sites you do not recognize or that are allowed to spam alerts.
    • Also review pop-up and redirect permissions if pages keep opening on their own.
