How to Fix Vulkan Shader Compilation Stutter in Games

What Causes This?

The problem can also get worse if your graphics driver shader cache is corrupted, Windows is busy with background tasks, or the game’s precompiled shader cache is missing or outdated. Slow storage, unstable overclocks, and overlay apps can add extra stutter too.

• Stutter on the first run after updating a game or GPU driver

How to Fix It Manually

1. Update your graphics driver cleanly

   1. Press Windows + X and click Device Manager.
   2. Expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU, and choose Properties to confirm the model.
   3. Download the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
   4. During installation, choose Clean installation if your driver package offers it.
   5. Restart your PC after the update.

2. Clear the GPU shader cache

   1. Press Windows + R, type cleanmgr, and press Enter.
   2. Select your Windows drive, usually C:.
   3. Check DirectX Shader Cache and click OK.
   4. Let Windows remove the cache, then restart the PC.
   5. If you use NVIDIA or AMD software, also check its control panel for a Shader Cache option and reset it if available.

3. Let the game rebuild shaders fully

   1. Launch the game and look for options like Optimize Shaders, Building Shader Cache, or Pre-compiling Shaders.
   2. If the game offers this process, let it finish before starting gameplay.
   3. On Steam, open Steam > Library, right-click the game, click Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
   4. If the game has a shader cache folder in its settings or launcher, rebuild it after verifying files.

4. Reduce background load and disable overlays

   1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
   2. In Processes, close heavy apps you do not need, such as browsers, recording tools, RGB software, or launchers.
   3. Disable overlays in apps like Steam, Discord, GeForce Experience, or Xbox Game Bar.

5. Put Windows in a better performance state
