What Causes This?

Vulkan errors and black screens usually happen when the game cannot properly talk to your graphics driver through the Vulkan API. The most common causes are outdated or corrupted GPU drivers, missing Vulkan runtime components, broken game files, or conflicts from overlays and tuning tools. In some cases, Windows updates, unsupported hardware features, or the game trying to use the wrong graphics adapter can also trigger the problem.

Common Symptoms

  • A game crashes at launch with a Vulkan-related error message
  • The game opens to a black screen and never loads the menu
  • The game starts, then freezes or closes without warning
  • Only certain Vulkan-based games fail while other games work normally
  • You see graphical glitches, flickering, or a blank display after startup

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart your PC and close background apps

    • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
    • End unnecessary apps that hook into games, such as screen recorders, RGB tools, overclocking utilities, and overlays.
    • Restart your PC before testing the game again.
  2. Update or reinstall your graphics driver

    • Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
    • Expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU, and select Uninstall device.
    • Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device if available, then click Uninstall.
    • Restart your PC.
    • Download and install the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel for your exact GPU model.
    • After installation, reboot and launch the game again.
  3. Make sure Windows is fully updated

    • Open Settings > Windows Update.
    • Click Check for updates and install everything available, including optional driver or platform updates if relevant.
    • Restart your PC after updates finish.
  4. Verify the game files

    • In Steam: open Library, right-click the game, select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
    • In Epic Games Launcher: open Library, click the three dots next to the game, then choose Manage > Verify.
    • In other launchers, use the built-in Repair or Verify option.
    • Corrupted or missing files can prevent Vulkan from initializing correctly.
  5. Disable overlays and compatibility settings

    • Turn off overlays in Steam, Discord, GeForce Experience, Xbox Game Bar, or MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner.
    • Then find the game’s .exe file, right-click it, and choose Properties.
    • Open the Compatibility tab and uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode for if it is enabled.
    • Also try checking Disable fullscreen optimizations, click Apply, and test the game.
  6. Force the game to use the correct GPU

    • Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
    • Add the game if it is not listed, click it, then choose Options.
    • Select High performance to force your dedicated graphics card, then click Save.
    • This is especially important on laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics.
  7. Try a different launch mode if the game supports it

    • Some games let you switch between Vulkan and DirectX in launcher settings or launch options.
    • If Vulkan keeps failing, launch the game with DirectX first, then update drivers and test Vulkan again later.
    • If the game recently updated, check the game’s support page for known Vulkan issues or patches.
