What Causes This?

Discord screen share black screen or lag usually happens when Windows, Discord, and your graphics driver don’t agree on how to capture and encode video. Common triggers include outdated GPU drivers, hardware acceleration conflicts, the wrong GPU being used on laptops, overloaded system resources, or Discord not having permission to capture a protected or full-screen app. In some cases, corrupted Discord cache files or Windows graphics settings can also cause the problem.

Common Symptoms

  • The shared screen appears completely black to other people
  • Screen share starts, but the video is choppy, delayed, or freezes
  • Discord crashes or becomes slow when you begin sharing
  • Only a game or app window shows black, while other windows share normally
  • Audio works during screen share, but the video does not

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart Discord and the app you’re trying to share

    • Close Discord completely by right-clicking the Discord icon in the system tray and selecting Quit Discord.
    • Close the game, browser, or app you were sharing.
    • Reopen both and test screen share again.
    • If possible, share a specific app window instead of the full display.
  2. Turn Discord hardware acceleration off

    • Open Discord.
    • Click the gear icon next to your username to open User Settings.
    • Go to Advanced.
    • Turn Hardware Acceleration Off.
    • Restart Discord when prompted.
    • If it was already off, try turning it on instead and test again.
  3. Update your graphics driver

    • Press Windows + X and click Device Manager.
    • Expand Display adapters.
    • Right-click your GPU and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    • For a better result, download the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel and install it manually.
    • Restart your PC after the update.
  4. Set Discord to use the correct GPU

    • On laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics, Discord may use the wrong one.
    • Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
    • If Discord is not listed, click Browse and add Discord.exe from its install folder.
    • Click Discord > Options.
    • Try High performance first, then test screen share. If the issue started after a change, try Power saving instead.
  5. Disable conflicting overlays and background apps

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Under Processes, close heavy apps using lots of CPU, Memory, or GPU.
    • Disable overlays from apps like Steam, NVIDIA GeForce Experience, Xbox Game Bar, or MSI Afterburner.
    • To disable Xbox Game Bar, go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and turn it off.
  6. Clear Discord cache

    • Press Windows + R, type %appdata%, and press Enter.
    • Open the Discord folder.
    • Delete the contents of the folders named Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache.
    • Restart Discord and test again.
  7. Check Windows capture and graphics settings

    • Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings.
    • Turn Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling off if it’s on, then restart your PC. If it’s already off, you can test with it on.
    • If you’re sharing a protected video stream or DRM content, Discord may show a black screen by design. Test with a normal app like Notepad or File Explorer.
