Deadlock is still in early development, so crashes can come from game updates, unstable builds, Steam file mismatches, or conflicts with overlays and capture tools. Multiplayer games in active development can also crash when a patch changes shaders, graphics settings, or network-related components.
More general causes include outdated or corrupted GPU drivers, damaged shader caches, background apps hooking into the game, Windows system file problems, and unstable overclocks. If the game closes without an error, start with Steam, graphics drivers, and overlays before moving to deeper Windows checks.
Common Symptoms
- Deadlock crashes to desktop during launch or while loading into a match.
- The game freezes on a black screen or stops responding after the intro.
- Deadlock closes a few minutes into gameplay with no clear error message.
- Crashes happen after a game update or GPU driver update.
- The game runs, then stutters heavily before freezing or shutting down.
How to Fix It Manually
-
Verify Deadlock’s files in Steam. In Steam, open Library > right-click Deadlock > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. This checks for missing or damaged files after patches or interrupted updates. Steam’s official help covers file verification: https://help.steampowered.com/
-
Turn off overlays and capture tools first. Disable the Steam Overlay for Deadlock in the game’s Steam properties, then close Discord overlay, GeForce Experience/NVIDIA App overlay, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, and RivaTuner Statistics Server if you use them. These are common crash triggers in multiplayer games because they hook into the game while it is rendering.
-
Lower graphics settings and undo any manual tweaks. If Deadlock crashes in matches but launches normally, reduce texture quality, shadows, effects, and any upscaling or frame generation options you have enabled. If you changed GPU overclock, undervolt, or per-game driver settings, return them to default and test again.
-
Clear the GPU shader cache using the driver vendor’s supported method. Corrupted shader cache data can cause launch crashes, stutter, or freezes after updates. Use your GPU vendor’s normal cache reset option or Windows Disk Cleanup if applicable, then reboot before testing. NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel provide driver support pages with current instructions: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/support/ , https://www.amd.com/en/support , https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support.html
-
Update or reinstall your graphics driver cleanly. Install the latest stable driver for your GPU directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. If crashes started right after a driver update, try a clean reinstall of the same driver or a known stable newer release from the vendor rather than relying on Windows Update.
-
Check Windows for corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run
sfc /scannow, thenDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Microsoft documents both tools here: https://support.microsoft.com/windows/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system-files and https://learn.microsoft.com/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/repair-a-windows-image -
Close unnecessary background apps and test a clean startup. RGB tools, motherboard utilities, third-party antivirus, recording software, and browser tabs can all add memory pressure or interfere with the game. Microsoft’s clean boot guide is here: https://support.microsoft.com/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows
-
Check crash details in Windows logs if the problem continues. Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and look for an error entry at the time of the crash, or use Reliability Monitor to see whether the fault points to the game, a driver, or another module. If Deadlock only crashes after a specific patch, this information is useful when reporting it through Steam or the game’s official support channels.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can help you rule out common PC-side causes without guessing. Use System Cleaner to clear supported GPU shader caches, Performance Monitor to spot background processes using too much CPU or memory while Deadlock is running, and Startup Manager to disable non-essential apps that load with Windows and may conflict with the game.
If you want, you can also try Game Mode on Windows to apply supported gaming-related tweaks and keep a record of how to restore them later.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does Deadlock crash right after I press Play on Steam?
- The most common causes are damaged game files, overlay conflicts, or a bad shader cache after an update. Verify the game in Steam, disable overlays, and then update or reinstall your GPU driver.
- Can outdated graphics drivers make Deadlock freeze or close?
- Yes. Old or corrupted GPU drivers can cause launch crashes, black screens, freezing, or sudden desktop crashes, especially after the game receives rendering changes.
- How do I check what caused a Deadlock crash on Windows?
- Use Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor and check the timestamp of the crash. If the fault mentions a GPU driver, overlay tool, or another background app, that usually points you toward the next fix to try.
