What Is NordVPN?
NordVPN is a virtual private network (VPN) app from Nord Security. It routes your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server, which can help protect traffic on untrusted networks and can make your connection appear to come from another region.
On Windows, macOS and Linux, NordVPN may also install background components so it can connect quickly, apply auto-connect rules, or show notifications. That is normal for a VPN client.
Is It Safe?
Usually, yes — if it was installed by you or your organization and it is published by Nord Security. NordVPN is a legitimate commercial VPN product.
If you are checking a suspicious file, do not rely on the name alone. Open the app's file location and verify that the executable is the NordVPN app you installed, then check its digital signature or publisher information. A random file named nordvpn.exe in an unusual folder deserves investigation.
Also remember that a VPN changes how your network traffic is routed. That is expected behavior, not malware by itself.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
Usually, startup is optional.
Keep it enabled at startup if you want NordVPN to connect automatically when you sign in, if you use it for work, or if you want protection before you open a browser or other apps. Disable it at startup if you only use it occasionally and do not mind opening it manually when needed.
Disabling startup does not usually remove the app or stop it from working. It just means NordVPN will not launch automatically when you log in. If your company requires a VPN connection, leave it enabled unless your IT team says otherwise.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
A VPN can use more CPU or memory than usual when it is:
- connecting or reconnecting to a server
- encrypting heavy traffic like downloads or streaming
- checking network changes after sleep, wake, or Wi-Fi switching
- updating itself in the background
Short spikes are normal. Constant high usage is less normal. Try disconnecting and reconnecting, switching servers, restarting the app, or updating it. If usage stays high even when disconnected, quit the app and open it again. On Linux, some usage may come from the VPN service rather than the main app window.
How to Disable or Remove It
To stop NordVPN from launching at sign-in, turn off its launch-at-login or auto-start option in the app, or disable its startup entry in your OS startup settings.
If you want to remove it completely, uninstall it through your operating system's normal app removal method. On Windows, that is usually Settings or Apps. On macOS, use the app's uninstaller if provided or remove it the normal app way. On Linux, remove it with your package manager if that is how it was installed.
If you still need the VPN sometimes, disabling startup is the safer first step than uninstalling.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can show whether NordVPN is set to start automatically and let you disable that startup entry without uninstalling the app. On Windows, it can also show boot impact for startup items.
If NordVPN seems heavy, Kudu's Performance Monitor can show its CPU and memory use and help you identify whether the main app or a related background process is active. If a suspicious nordvpn.exe appears from an unexpected location, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help you investigate persistence and suspicious behavior.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I disable NordVPN at startup and still use it later?
- Yes. Disabling startup usually only stops it from opening automatically when you sign in. You can still launch NordVPN manually when you want to connect.
- Is nordvpn.exe always safe?
- No file is safe just because of its name. Check that it belongs to Nord Security and comes from the installed NordVPN app in a normal app location.
- Should a VPN run all the time?
- That depends on how you use it. Leave it on at startup if you want automatic protection or need it for work; otherwise it is fine to start it only when needed.
