What Is NordPass?
NordPass is a password manager from Nord Security. It stores logins, notes, payment details and other saved items in an encrypted vault, then helps fill them in when you sign in to websites or apps.
On Windows and macOS, the desktop app may run at login so your vault, browser integration or autofill features are ready sooner. That background start is for convenience, not because the operating system needs it.
Is It Safe?
Yes, if it is the real NordPass app published by Nord Security. A legitimate install is generally safe.
Because password managers handle sensitive data, it is worth checking that the app is genuine if you did not install it yourself. On Windows, right-click nordpass.exe, open Properties, then check the file location and Digital Signatures tab. On macOS, check that the app is in your Applications folder and shows Nord Security as the developer in Finder or Gatekeeper prompts.
Be cautious if a file named nordpass.exe is running from an unusual folder, has no valid signature, or appeared without your consent. In that case, investigate it rather than trusting the name alone.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
Usually yes, if you do not need NordPass ready the moment you sign in. Disabling startup should not remove the app or your saved vault. You can still open NordPass when you need it.
Keep it enabled at startup if you rely on it all day, want faster access after login, or use its desktop features constantly. Disable it if you rarely use it, prefer fewer background apps, or are troubleshooting slow sign-in.
On macOS, turning off login launch may mean NordPass and related helper features are not available until you open the app manually.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
A password manager should usually stay light. Short spikes can happen when NordPass starts, unlocks your vault, syncs changes, updates itself, or talks to its browser extension.
If usage stays high for more than a few minutes, try closing and reopening the app, signing out and back in if needed, or updating NordPass and your browser extension. Also check whether the app is stuck syncing or waiting for a browser process.
If nordpass.exe shows unusually high usage and the file location or signature looks wrong, investigate it. A trusted app should not need constant heavy CPU use when idle.
How to Disable or Remove It
On Windows, you can disable NordPass from startup in Task Manager's Startup apps section, or in Settings > Apps > Startup. If NordPass added a scheduled task or another startup entry, you may need to disable that entry too.
On macOS, check Login Items in System Settings and remove or disable NordPass there if it appears.
If you want to remove it completely, uninstall NordPass through normal app removal tools: Installed apps on Windows or moving the app to Trash on macOS if that is how it was installed. If you still need your saved passwords, make sure you can sign back in before uninstalling.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can show whether NordPass is set to launch at startup and where that startup entry comes from. On Windows, Startup Manager checks Run keys, the Startup folder and Task Scheduler; on macOS, it checks Launch Agents.
If NordPass is using too many resources, Kudu's Performance Monitor can show its CPU and memory use and link the running process to its startup item. If the app looks suspicious, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help check for persistence and known malicious patterns, but it complements your antivirus rather than replacing it.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I disable NordPass at startup without losing my passwords?
- Yes. Disabling startup only stops it from opening automatically when you sign in. Your saved vault should still be there when you open NordPass manually.
- Why does NordPass need to run in the background?
- Usually for convenience, such as faster unlock, syncing and desktop integration. It is not required by Windows or macOS.
- What if I see nordpass.exe but I never installed NordPass?
- Check the file location and digital signature before trusting it. If it is unsigned, in an unusual folder, or appeared unexpectedly, investigate it as potentially unwanted or malicious.
