What Is AnyDesk?

AnyDesk is a remote desktop and remote support app. It lets you view and control another computer over a network or the internet, transfer files, and provide technical help from a distance. On Windows its main executable is typically anydesk.exe, published by AnyDesk Software GmbH.

Businesses often use it for IT support. Home users may use it to reach their own PC remotely or let someone they trust fix a problem.

Is It Safe?

Usually, yes — if you installed it yourself, your employer installed it, or you recognize why it is there. AnyDesk is a legitimate program, not malware by itself.

That said, remote access tools are also abused by scammers because they give someone control of your device. If you do not remember installing AnyDesk, or someone told you to install it during a suspicious phone call, treat that as a warning sign.

On Windows, check that anydesk.exe opens from the normal AnyDesk install location rather than a random temp or downloads folder, and verify the file's digital signature shows AnyDesk Software GmbH. If the name matches but the file is in an unusual location or unsigned, investigate before trusting it.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

For most people, yes, you can disable it at startup if you do not need constant remote access. AnyDesk will still work when you open it manually.

Leave it enabled if:

  • you use unattended access to reach this PC remotely
  • it is part of your workplace support setup
  • another trusted person regularly helps manage the machine

Disable it if:

  • you only use it occasionally
  • you no longer need remote support
  • you are not sure why it starts with Windows, macOS, or Linux

Disabling startup does not usually uninstall the app. It just stops it from launching automatically.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

AnyDesk can use more CPU, GPU, memory, or network bandwidth while:

  • a remote session is active
  • the screen is changing quickly, such as video or games
  • multiple monitors are being streamed
  • file transfers or clipboard sync are running
  • it is reconnecting repeatedly because of a network problem

If usage stays high when no session is active, check whether unattended access is enabled, whether another user is connected, or whether the app is stuck. Closing and reopening it may help. If you do not use it anymore, disable it at startup or remove it.

How to Disable or Remove It

If you still want AnyDesk installed but not always running, disable its startup entry in your OS or in AnyDesk's own settings if that option is present.

To remove it completely:

  • Windows: uninstall AnyDesk from Settings > Apps or Control Panel
  • macOS: remove the app and any related login or background items if present
  • Linux: uninstall it with your distro's package manager if it was installed that way

If this PC should never be remotely accessible, also review AnyDesk's unattended access settings before uninstalling.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether AnyDesk is set to start automatically and where that startup entry comes from. Use Startup Manager to disable or remove the entry safely, and Performance Monitor to see whether anydesk.exe is using CPU, memory, disk, or network right now.

If you do not recognize it, Malware Scanner can help check for suspicious persistence or lookalike files. Kudu complements antivirus; it does not replace it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I end AnyDesk from Task Manager?
Yes, if you are not using a remote session. Ending it will disconnect any active connection and stop background access until it is opened again.
Is AnyDesk a virus?
No, AnyDesk is legitimate remote desktop software. It becomes suspicious only if you did not install it, do not expect it, or it appears from an unusual file location.
Will disabling AnyDesk at startup break anything?
Usually no. It just means AnyDesk will not be ready immediately after sign-in, so unattended remote access will not work until the app is launched.
