Windows location access is controlled by a mix of system-wide privacy settings, per-app permissions, and background services such as Location Services. If location is turned on at the device level, Windows and supported apps can use GPS, Wi‑Fi, IP address, and nearby network data to estimate where your PC is. Many users only disable one setting, which leaves location available elsewhere, or they miss app-specific permissions that keep sharing data in the background.
Common Symptoms
- Maps, Weather, or browser-based apps know your location automatically
- Windows shows local recommendations, nearby results, or region-based content you did not ask for
- Apps continue requesting location permission
- You want tighter privacy but are not sure which setting actually disables location
- Background apps seem to use location even when you are not actively using them
How to Fix It Manually
-
Open Windows Privacy settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- In Windows 11, go to Privacy & security.
- In Windows 10, go to Privacy.
-
Turn off location access globally
- Select Location.
- In Windows 11, switch Location services to Off.
- If you want stricter control, click Location first, then turn off Location services so Windows and apps cannot access your device location.
- In some versions, you may also see Allow access to location on this device. If available, click Change and set it to Off.
-
Block location access for specific apps
- Stay in Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- If you do not want to disable location for everything, leave Location services on and instead scroll to Let apps access your location.
- Turn Let apps access your location to Off to block all Store apps, or disable individual apps one by one from the list below.
- Review apps like Maps, Weather, Camera, and any third-party apps you do not trust.
-
Disable desktop app location access where possible
- In the same Location page, check the Let desktop apps access your location section.
- You may not always get individual toggles for desktop apps, but Windows will show which desktop apps recently requested location.
- If you see an app you do not want using location, close it and change its own in-app privacy settings or uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
-
Clear stored location history
- In Settings > Privacy & security > Location, scroll to Location history.
- Click Clear to remove location data stored on the device.
- This is useful if you want to stop future access and wipe recent history already saved by Windows.
-
Stop apps from running in the background
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select an app, click the three dots > Advanced options.
- Under Background apps permissions, choose Never if available.
- This helps prevent apps from checking location when you are not actively using them.
-
Restart your PC and test
- Restart Windows after making the changes.
- Reopen Settings > Privacy & security > Location and confirm the switches stayed off.
- Test an app like Weather or Maps to make sure it no longer detects your location automatically.
