Windows lets apps request access to personal communication data like your contacts, calendar, email, and call history. This usually happens when privacy permissions are left enabled by default, when you install apps from the Microsoft Store, or when desktop apps are allowed broad access through Windows privacy settings. In some cases, older apps keep permissions you no longer want, even if you do not actively use them.
Common Symptoms
- Apps show your contacts, calendar events, or email details without you expecting it
- You see permission prompts for communication data during app setup
- A messaging, mail, or productivity app seems to know too much about your activity
- Privacy settings show multiple apps with access enabled
- You want to tighten privacy but are not sure which apps are safe to allow
How to Fix It Manually
-
Open Windows Privacy settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- In Windows 11, go to Privacy & security.
- In Windows 10, go to Privacy.
-
Review Contacts access
- Scroll to App permissions and click Contacts.
- Turn off Contacts access if you do not want any app to read your contacts.
- If you want some apps to keep working, leave the main setting on and switch off access for individual apps in the list below.
-
Review Calendar access
- Go back to App permissions and open Calendar.
- Turn off Calendar access completely, or disable it only for apps you do not trust or no longer use.
- Check the setting for Let apps access your calendar and make sure only necessary apps are enabled.
-
Review Email access
- Open Email under App permissions.
- Disable Email access if you want to block all apps from reading email-related data.
- Otherwise, go through the app list and turn off access for anything unnecessary, especially apps you do not recognize.
-
Review Call history access
- Open Call history in the same App permissions section.
- Turn off Call history access entirely, or disable access app by app.
- If you do not use calling features on your PC, this setting can usually be turned off safely.
-
Check desktop app access where available
- In some privacy categories, Windows also shows a setting like Let desktop apps access...
- If you see this option, turn it off unless you specifically need a desktop program to use that data.
- Be careful with apps like Outlook, Teams, or phone sync tools if you rely on their communication features.
-
Remove apps you do not trust
- Press Windows + I and open Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10).
- Find suspicious or unused apps, click the three dots or select the app, then choose Uninstall.
- Restart your PC after removing anything questionable.
-
Test and recheck permissions
- Reopen the privacy pages and confirm your changes stayed applied.
- Launch the apps you still use and make sure they work as expected.
- If an app breaks, return only the specific permission it actually needs instead of re-enabling everything.
