Windows lets apps request access to hardware and device-level features like Bluetooth, radios, nearby devices, microphones, cameras, and other connected hardware. Over time, installed apps, background utilities, browser-based apps, and preinstalled software can accumulate permissions you didn’t mean to allow. This can lead to unnecessary device scanning, tracking, battery drain, or apps interacting with hardware when they don’t need to.
Common Symptoms
- Apps seem to detect nearby devices or Bluetooth accessories without a clear reason
- You notice unexpected Bluetooth activity or device pairing prompts
- Privacy settings show many apps with hardware access enabled
- Battery drain increases when wireless features are active
- You want to reduce tracking or lock down device access for unused apps
How to Fix It Manually
-
Open Windows Privacy settings.
- Press
Windows + Ito open Settings. - In Windows 11, go to Privacy & security.
- In Windows 10, go to Privacy.
- Press
-
Review Bluetooth and nearby device permissions.
- In Privacy & security, scroll to App permissions.
- Open categories such as Bluetooth, Other devices, Radios, or Nearby devices, depending on your Windows version and hardware.
- If you see a master toggle for app access, decide whether to turn it Off completely.
- If you want some apps to keep access, leave the main setting on and disable access for individual apps you don’t trust or don’t use.
-
Check related hardware permissions that apps often use alongside Bluetooth.
- In the same App permissions area, review:
- Location
- Camera
- Microphone
- Phone calls
- Messaging
- Turn off access for apps that do not need these features. Be especially careful with apps you rarely open, trial software, and bundled manufacturer utilities.
- In the same App permissions area, review:

-
Remove apps you no longer need.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features in Windows 10).
- Sort by Install date or Name and look for unused apps, OEM tools, and old device utilities.
- Select the app and click Uninstall.
