Zoom can start lagging on Windows when your PC is low on available CPU, RAM, disk space, or network stability. Temporary files, too many background apps, outdated graphics or network drivers, and Zoom using hardware acceleration poorly can all cause choppy video and delayed audio. In many cases, the issue is not Zoom alone — it is Windows running too many tasks at once.

What Causes This?

Zoom lag on Windows is usually caused by high system resource usage or unstable network performance. If your PC is busy with background apps, startup programs, browser tabs, cloud sync, or temporary file buildup, Zoom may not get enough CPU, memory, or disk access to run smoothly. Outdated display drivers, poor Wi-Fi, and Zoom video settings can also make meetings freeze, stutter, or fall out of sync.

Common Symptoms

  • Video freezes or becomes choppy during meetings
  • Audio cuts out, delays, or goes out of sync
  • Zoom takes a long time to open or respond
  • Screen sharing becomes slow or stutters
  • Your PC fan gets loud and CPU usage spikes during calls

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Close unnecessary background apps

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    • Under the Processes tab, look for apps using high CPU, Memory, or Disk.
    • Close anything you do not need during your Zoom call, such as browsers with many tabs, game launchers, cloud sync tools, or streaming apps.
    • Right-click the app and select End task.
  2. Restart Zoom and reboot your PC

    • Completely exit Zoom by right-clicking the Zoom icon in the system tray and choosing Quit.
    • Restart your computer from Start > Power > Restart.
    • Reopen Zoom and test a meeting again. This clears stuck background processes and temporary memory issues.
  3. Delete temporary files

    • Press Windows + R, type %temp%, and press Enter.
    • Press Ctrl + A to select the files, then press Delete.
    • Skip any files Windows says are still in use.
    • Next, go to Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files.
    • Check items you want to remove, then click Remove files.
  4. Reduce Zoom video load

    • Open Zoom and click the gear icon for Settings.
    • Select Video.
    • Turn off features you do not need, such as HD video or visual enhancements if available.
    • In Settings > Video > Advanced, try disabling hardware acceleration options if Zoom is stuttering or freezing.
  5. Check your internet connection

    • If possible, switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection.
    • If you must use Wi-Fi, move closer to your router and disconnect other devices that are heavily streaming or downloading.
    • Pause large downloads, OneDrive sync, Steam updates, or Windows updates during calls.
  6. Update Windows and your display driver

    • Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • Install available updates and restart if prompted.
    • Then right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
    • Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics device, and choose Update driver.
    • Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Disable heavy startup apps

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and go to the Startup apps tab.
    • Right-click apps you do not need starting with Windows and choose Disable.
    • Restart your PC to reduce background load before your next Zoom meeting.
