What Causes This?

Zoom usually fails to detect your camera because Windows is blocking camera access, another app is already using the webcam, or the camera driver is missing or corrupted. It can also happen after a Windows update, a Zoom update, or when the wrong camera is selected inside Zoom. On laptops, physical privacy shutters or keyboard camera-disable keys can cause the same issue.

Common Symptoms

  • Zoom shows a black screen or says no camera is available
  • Your webcam works in one app but not in Zoom
  • Zoom displays “Camera not detected” or similar errors
  • The camera option is missing or grayed out in Zoom settings
  • Video suddenly stops working after an update or restart

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Make sure the camera is physically enabled

    • If you use a laptop, check for a privacy shutter covering the webcam.
    • Look for a camera key on the keyboard, often on the function row, and press it with Fn if needed.
    • If you use a USB webcam, unplug it and reconnect it to a different USB port.
  2. Check whether Windows is blocking camera access

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Privacy & security > Camera.
    • Turn on Camera access.
    • Turn on Let apps access your camera.
    • Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera.
    • Scroll down and confirm Zoom is allowed if listed.
  3. Close other apps that may be using the webcam

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Look for apps like Teams, Skype, Discord, OBS, browser tabs with video calls, or webcam software from Logitech, Dell, Lenovo, or HP.
    • Select each one and click End task.
    • Reopen Zoom and test the camera again.
  4. Select the correct camera in Zoom

    • Open Zoom.
    • Click the gear icon in the top-right to open Settings.
    • Click Video.
    • Under Camera, use the dropdown to choose your webcam.
    • If you have multiple cameras, switch between them and check the preview.
  5. Restart or reinstall the camera driver

    • Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
    • Expand Cameras or Imaging devices.
    • Right-click your webcam and choose Disable device, then right-click it again and choose Enable device.
    • If that does not help, right-click the camera and choose Uninstall device.
    • Restart your PC. Windows will usually reinstall the driver automatically.
    • If it does not, click Action > Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager.
  6. Check for driver and Windows updates

    • Press Windows + I and go to Windows Update.
    • Click Check for updates and install everything available.
    • In Device Manager, right-click your webcam and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    • If you use a laptop, also check the manufacturer’s support app or website for camera driver updates.
  7. Test the camera outside Zoom

    • Open the Camera app from the Start menu.
    • If the camera does not work there either, the issue is likely with Windows, the driver, or the hardware.
    • If it works in the Camera app but not in Zoom, sign out of Zoom, restart the app, and install the latest Zoom version.
