What Causes This?

Discord usually lags on Windows when your PC is short on available CPU, RAM, disk speed, or network stability. Background apps, startup programs, browser tabs, overlays, and temporary files can all compete with Discord and make voice chat, screen sharing, or the app itself feel slow. In some cases, outdated graphics, audio, or network drivers can also cause stuttering, delayed input, or choppy calls.

Common Symptoms

  • Discord takes a long time to open or switch channels
  • Voice calls cut out, stutter, or have delayed audio
  • Screen sharing is choppy or freezes
  • Typing, scrolling, or opening settings feels slow
  • Discord uses unusually high CPU or memory in Task Manager

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart Discord and check Task Manager

    • Close Discord completely by right-clicking the Discord icon in the system tray and selecting Quit Discord.
    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Under Processes, look for apps using high CPU, Memory, or Disk.
    • Close anything non-essential that is heavily using system resources.
  2. Disable Discord hardware acceleration

    • Open Discord.
    • Click the gear icon next to your username to open User Settings.
    • Scroll to Advanced.
    • Turn Hardware Acceleration Off.
    • Restart Discord when prompted.
    • If Discord was already lagging badly, this setting often helps immediately on lower-end or older systems.
  3. Turn off overlays and unnecessary Discord features

    • In User Settings, open Game Overlay and disable Enable in-game overlay.
    • Go to Voice & Video and scroll down to disable features you do not need, such as advanced video options or extra processing features if they are causing strain.
    • If lag happens during streaming, lower your screen share resolution and frame rate.
  4. Clear Discord cache files

    • Press Windows + R to open Run.
    • Type %appdata% and press Enter.
    • Open the Discord folder.
    • Delete the folders named Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache.
    • Restart Discord.
Corrupted or oversized cache files can make Discord load slowly or behave inconsistently.
  5. Reduce background apps and startup load

    • Open Settings with Windows + I.
    • Go to Apps > Startup.
    • Turn off startup apps you do not need, especially game launchers, chat apps, RGB tools, and browser helpers.
    • Then go back to Task Manager and confirm fewer background processes are running.
    • If your PC is low on memory, also close unused browser tabs before using Discord.
  6. Check for Windows and driver updates

    • Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • Install any pending updates and restart your PC.
    • Then update your graphics and audio drivers from Device Manager or your PC/GPU manufacturer’s app.
    • Outdated drivers can cause lag in voice calls, video, and hardware-accelerated apps like Discord.
  7. Reinstall Discord if the app is still slow

    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find Discord, click the three dots, and select Uninstall.
    • After uninstalling, press Windows + R, type %appdata%, and delete the Discord folder if it remains.
    • Download and install the latest version of Discord from its official site.
