What Causes This?

Proxy settings problems on Windows usually happen when a proxy server is enabled by mistake, left behind by old software, or changed by malware, VPN tools, or browser extensions. In some cases, Windows is set to use a manual proxy that no longer works, or it keeps trying to detect settings automatically and fails. Corrupted network settings can also cause Windows apps and browsers to route traffic incorrectly.

Common Symptoms

  • Websites do not load even though Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected
  • You see errors like "Proxy server is refusing connections" or "Unable to connect to proxy server"
  • Microsoft Store, Outlook, or other apps cannot reach the internet
  • Browsers work inconsistently across different profiles or networks
  • Internet starts working again only after disabling a VPN or restarting the PC

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check Windows proxy settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Network & internet > Proxy.
    • Under Automatically detect settings, turn it On.
    • Under Use setup script, turn it Off unless your school or workplace gave you a script address.
    • Under Use a proxy server, turn it Off unless you know you need a specific proxy.
  2. Turn off proxy settings in Internet Options

    • Press Windows + S, type Internet Options, and open it.
    • Click the Connections tab, then select LAN settings.
    • In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window:
      • Check Automatically detect settings
      • Uncheck Use automatic configuration script unless required
      • Uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN
    • Click OK, then Apply.
  3. Reset browser network settings

    • If you use Microsoft Edge or Chrome, they usually follow Windows proxy settings, so restarting the browser may be enough.
    • In Firefox, proxy settings can be separate:
      • Open Firefox
      • Click the menu button > Settings
      • Search for proxy
      • Click Settings...
      • Select No proxy or Use system proxy settings
    • Close and reopen the browser.
  4. Disable VPNs, security tools, or extensions temporarily

    • Disconnect any active VPN.
    • Pause or exit third-party antivirus, privacy tools, or network filtering apps for a moment.
    • In your browser, disable suspicious extensions, especially anything related to "privacy," "proxy," or "unblocker."
    • Test your connection again.
  5. Reset network settings with Command Prompt

    • Press Windows + S, type cmd.
    • Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
    • Run these commands one at a time:
      1. netsh winhttp reset proxy
      2. ipconfig /flushdns
      3. netsh winsock reset
    • Restart your PC after running them.
  6. Scan for malware or unwanted software

    • Press Windows + I > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
    • Click Quick scan.
    • If the problem started suddenly, also check Installed apps in Settings and remove anything unfamiliar that was recently added.
  7. Check if your network requires a proxy

    • On work or school devices, proxy settings may be managed by your organization.
    • If the settings keep turning back on, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and confirm whether the PC is managed.
    • If it is, contact your IT admin before changing settings again.
