What Causes This?

Windows 11 updates can reset power settings when they replace system components, refresh default power plans, or re-enable features like Fast Startup and sleep timers. This is more common after major feature updates, driver updates, or when laptop manufacturer software overrides Windows power options. Corrupted power plans or background utilities that manage battery and performance can also cause your settings to keep changing.

Common Symptoms

  • Your sleep, screen timeout, or lid-close settings go back to default after an update
  • The PC starts sleeping too quickly or never sleeps at all
  • High performance, balanced, or custom power plans disappear or switch automatically
  • Fast Startup turns back on after you disabled it
  • Battery life or fan noise suddenly changes after Windows Update

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check whether Windows switched your power plan

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings
    • Go to System > Power & battery
    • Under Power mode, choose the setting you want, such as Best power efficiency, Balanced, or Best performance
    • Then click Screen and sleep and set your preferred times again
  2. Restore or recreate missing power plans

    • Press Windows + X and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin)
    • Type this command and press Enter:
      powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
    • This restores the default Windows power plans if they were damaged or removed
    • After that, go back to Settings > System > Power & battery and reapply your preferred settings
  3. Turn off Fast Startup if it keeps re-enabling

    • Press Windows + R, type control, and press Enter
    • Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options
    • Click Choose what the power buttons do
    • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
    • Under Shutdown settings, uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended)
    • Click Save changes
  4. Stop manufacturer utilities from overriding power settings

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc
    • Click the Startup apps tab
    • Look for apps from your PC maker, such as Dell Power Manager, Lenovo Vantage, ASUS Armoury Crate, or similar battery/performance tools
    • Disable any utility that manages power profiles, then restart your PC
    • If needed, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall software you do not use
  5. Check for Group Policy or local policy resets

    • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter
(Skip this step if you use Windows 11 Home and it does not open.)
    • Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Power Management
    • Review any enabled policies related to sleep, hibernate, or button actions
    • Set anything unwanted to Not Configured, then restart
  6. Repair system files if settings keep reverting

    • Open Terminal (Admin) again with Windows + X
    • Run these commands one at a time:
      sfc /scannow
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Restart the PC after both scans finish
    • Then recheck your power settings
  7. Reapply settings after the latest update

    • Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history
    • If the issue started right after a specific update, note the date and update name
    • Go back to System > Power & battery and set everything again after all pending updates are fully installed
    • In some cases, settings reset once during the update process, then stay stable afterward
