What Causes This?

Headset audio usually cuts out in games because of unstable audio drivers, USB power saving, Bluetooth interference, or Windows switching playback devices in the background. It can also happen when game audio settings conflict with Windows sound settings, especially after driver updates, headset firmware changes, or plugging the headset into a different USB port. On some PCs, high CPU usage or background apps that hook into audio can make the problem worse.

Common Symptoms

  • Game sound drops for a few seconds, then comes back
  • Audio cuts out only when using a USB or Bluetooth headset
  • Voice chat works, but game audio disappears intermittently
  • Sound crackles, stutters, or disconnects during intense gameplay
  • Windows briefly switches to speakers or another audio device

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Make sure the correct headset is set as the default playback device

    1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.
    2. Under Output, choose your headset.
    3. Click More sound settings.
    4. In the Playback tab, right-click your headset and choose Set as Default Device.
    5. Disable unused outputs you do not need, like extra monitor audio devices, by right-clicking them and selecting Disable.
  2. Restart Windows audio services

    1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    2. Find Windows Audio.
    3. Right-click it and select Restart.
    4. Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
    5. Test the game again.
  3. Update or reinstall the audio driver

    1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right-click your audio device or headset and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    4. If the issue started after an update, right-click the device, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver if available.
    5. If that does not help, right-click the device and select Uninstall device, then restart your PC so Windows reinstalls it.
  4. Turn off USB power saving

    1. Press Windows + X and open Device Manager.
    2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    3. Right-click each USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub, select Properties, then open the Power Management tab.
    4. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
    5. If your headset is USB, plug it directly into a rear motherboard USB port instead of a front panel hub or extender.
  5. Disable audio enhancements and exclusive mode

    1. Open Sound settings > More sound settings.
    2. In Playback, double-click your headset.
    3. Go to the Enhancements tab and check Disable all enhancements if available.
    4. Open the Advanced tab.
    5. Uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
    6. Click Apply, then OK.
  6. Check for background apps causing conflicts

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    2. Look for apps that manage audio or overlays, such as motherboard audio tools, RGB suites, Discord overlays, or game launchers.
    3. Close unnecessary apps and test again.
    4. If you use Bluetooth, move closer to the PC and disconnect other nearby Bluetooth devices temporarily to rule out interference.
